Meditating on your Beloved Deity

Om Namah Shivaya, Kirsten,

I think you should definitely ask Amma for your personal answer (and mantra)

that will define this for you. Maybe there's something in one of her books

about this too.

My understanding in the matter is that the SatGuru (or Amma in this case) is

everything. They are the goal personified and the means. If you meditate

upon them, it is all one needs. All bases are covered, as it were. However,

if you have an "Ishta Devata" (loosely meaning, "lord of your liking or

choice") that you are drawn toward, then that magnet also works for you by

focusing your love, devotion and concentration. Meditating is hard enough, I

feel...any incentive is good! And, since it all points to the same Infinite

Consciousness, no matter what form is ascribed to it, the effect must be the

same. Also, Amma herself has assumed the mood of Krishna in the

past...perhaps one solution would be to keep that form in mind...then you

have the whole package, as it were! Both Amma and Krishna...

My grandmother has the same lifelong attraction toward Krishna, and her

mantra (from our family Guru) was not a Krishna one! She is still regretful

about it, but is no less a Krishna devotee, and still counts the day messed

up when she does not get to reciting the Lalitha Sahasranamam...so I guess,

that's Hindu devotions for you. A mantra with one deity, a strong love for

another, and never a day without the hymn to the third! It all works,

because it's all seen it as aspects of the Brahman...the SatGuru is the

closest in this likening to the Formless Brahman, I think,

Usha

Meditating on your Beloved Deity

Namaste!

I haven't yet had the chance to ask Amma on which form I should

meditate. I feel a strong attraction to the form of Krishna, but am

wondering if it would be best for me to meditate upon Amma's form

until I receive advice from Her regarding this matter. I would love

to hear from those who may have experienced a similar situation, and

am especially interested to know whether Amma or the Swamis have

spoken about this....

Om Namah Shivaya!

Thank you, Usha, for taking the time to respond to my recent inquiry in such

great depth! Your advice helped to clarify this issue for me, and has inspired

me in my sadhana. I think I will spend some time looking through Amma's books

this weekend, taking notes on what She has said regarding meditation:)

with gratitude,

Kirsten
