Guest guest
According to the latest Amritavani, Amma was apparently trying to learn to sing bhajans in English. So this year during her America trip she might give discourses in english. All these years, Amma was running a major scam pretending she did not know how to speak english:-). During a visit to San Ramon ashram someone was telling me, that once during darshan there was jewish lady who wanted to get some confidential advice from Amma regarding something. So she spoke to Amma in Hebrew. And Amma replied back in Hebrew. And one of the swamis' who saw this was stunned and asked Amma about it. And Amma asked him that after being with Her for 20 years how could he even think of asking that. The ways of the Mother! Guest guest
Namah Shivaya, Vijaya - Yes, I read that Amritavani, however it said that she was reading the English words transilerated into Malayalam, so I don't think that gives any indication that she can really speak English to the extend that she can give a talk in it. So I don't think we should build up any expectations about that. Of course, we all know that Amma understands us beyond words... and many of us have experienced her understanding our English words. I think that she understands all languages on a deeper level than we can imagine with our minds. Guest guest
Reading Malayalam transliteration just means she's not used to Roman letters, the letter we use. It doesn't mean anything about how much English she understands or could speak. Guest guest
Hi If i remember right, i think the incident was a person who wanted an Hebrew mantra from Amma- he gave Swami the mantra and before the swami could give the slip of paper to Amma to show Her what mantra the man wanted, Amma had already pulled the man close and whispered the mantra in his ears and also explained the meaning! and when the Swami asked Amma how She knew She admonished Him that even after 20 years He still asked such a question, bala > > During a visit to San Ramon ashram someone was > telling > me, that once during darshan there was jewish lady > who > wanted to get some confidential advice from Amma > regarding something. Guest guest
Hi there! I just wanted to ad that not only do I agree that Amma understands beyond words and common language (as even us little souls may do in some capacity), but I also think she understands many English words and can comprehend much through association. For example, where I live Spanish is so prevalent that I've picked up many words and can get the gist of other's conversations without being able to actually converse in Spanish. Once I went to Amma with genuine spiritual distress and she gave me just enough words in English to set me right - I could understand her, nobody translated. It was much like an exchange I'd have with a Spanish speaker, who being likewise very exposed to English yet not fluent, we can betwixt us peck out word by word an understanding. I am sure Amma's translaters are there to make sure that WE are clear on what Amma is saying to us. Again though, and most importantly, Ammachi is "realized" and is one with Divine Mother who is all knowing because she is all being... Maya likes to engage me often with the contemplation of Amma the human to Amma the Supreme Shakti - what spiritual / intellecual wrestling that is! Yes, and also out of compassion for the translaters, for it is their sadhana to perform this seva and it is Amma's way of working on them too. I'm sure Amma understands more English then we think, and I also think if she wanted to speak English publicly, she could begin doing this very soon. It is all her play! Guest guest
Namah Shivaya Many years ago, probably in about 1994, Mother initiated a conversation with me in English. I was totally blown away, and had a hard time understanding Her because of Her accent, and the translator had to tell me what She said. She said several sentences to me in English. Just thinking about it puts me back into Her sweet lap. Jai Jai Ma!! Guest guest
Namaste! Most of us(certainly myself) are used to bragging the little that we know of various subjects- if i knew a few words in Japanese, I would probably be holding Japanese speaking classes for the "non-Japanese speaking" folks out there. By that comparison, why self -realised masters sometimes do not display what they know or even feign ignorance is a great mystery to me. The faculty of language is supposed to be contained in the "ooda" nadi and one has to do samyama on this nadi to bring forth knowledge of various languages from within oneself. I recall reading an account by if i remember correctly by Kriyananda(Donald Waters) that once Paramahamsa Yogananda went to a shop and spoke perfect Spanish with the shopkeeper even though he had never spoken Spanish in his whole life. So I am sure Amma has a good grasp of English; though not like some picking up a few words of Spanish from Spanish speakers. Guest guest
Interesting. What's the "ooda" nadi? I've never heard of that one. Lisa Ammachi, Yoga man <childofdevi> wrote: > Namaste!
