Guest guest
Nama Shivaya, This is a message from Premarupa's resident computer geek, Murari, concerning the mailing of pictures as attachments, which can cause problems that the senders are most likely not aware of. In view of these problems, proper netiquette for mailing picture attachments to lists suggests that such attachments be limited to 100k in size, and perhaps as small as 50k if more that one is sent. This is plenty of file space to get a good look at a picture, and those who wish to have larger, more detailed versions suitable for printing can request them to be mailed privately, off list. For those who are interested, which hopefully will include those who are kind enough to mail us these beautiful pictures, here's why, and here's how: If a list member has a DSL connection or some other high-speed internet connection, and if either the list member checks his/her e-mail regularly or has a large capacity mailbox, there is no problem. If not, difficulties can appear. 1. Over a slow connection, e.g. a 56k modem, it takes approximately 5 minutes to download a 1 megabyte picture attachment, and proportionately longer for larger attachments. If a list member has a number of messages to retrieve then she/he must wait for all attachments to download in order to retrieve personal and list messages. Most e-mail programs can be set to partially retrieve large attachments, which speeds the process, but then individual decisions must be made on whether to retrieve the attachments which were partially retrieved. Since a partially retrieved picture attachment can't be viewed, there is no basis on which to make these decisions without downloading the entire files. 2. If a member's mailbox capacity is exceeded by the receipt of 1 or more large attachments, many e-mail providers will bounce all messages sent to the account until the attachments are either deleted or downloaded. Thus the receipt of such attachments can cause a list-member to miss important personal messages or list messages, never knowing they were sent, and possibly confusing the senders when messages to friends and associates bounce. A single picture attachment of 1 megabyte or larger size can cause this to happen. Fortunately, there are easy solutions available. Most picture attachments are so-called jpegs, which have the .jpg suffix on the file name. Some are gifs (suffix .gif). Most scanner software can be set to save pictures in several file formats; since jpegs are smaller, the jpeg format is preferred. The jpeg format comes in different flavors, also, sometimes designated "highest quality", "high quality", "medium quality" and so forth. Often the setting is available in the preferences menu of the scanner software or in the "Save As" dialog box under "Options", where there is a slider or radio buttons which go from zero to 100%. It is never necessary to use 100% (highest) quality; 50% (medium) or 75% (high) will produce dramatically smaller files, which will look equally good on the computer screen. Another setting is resolution. This is usually expressed in dots per inch, or dpi. Computer screens are usually 72 or 96 dpi, so settings higher than 100 dpi produce no noticeable on-screen improvement, while a 100 dpi file is 36 times smaller than a 600 dpi file. Finally, the picture size also affects the file size. A 4 x 5 inch picture is four times smaller than an 8 x 10, and most scanners come with software that can control this as well. That's the story; hope it helps. Om Amriteshwaryai Namaha, Murari
Guest guest
All: Please note that attachments, of any kind, to emails sent to the list are prohibited. If you wish to share a picture with the group, please upload it into the "Files" section and email a brief announcement to the list. Many thanks, Om Amrtesvaryai Namah. Guest guest
Peter, Do you have the list set up to strip the attachments from emails? I have that set up on one of my lists since it actually is for my daughter's book club and it is filled with minors and we didn't want anything unacceptable posted. Guest guest
Not to be judgmental, but wouldn't it make more sense to upload any photos to the Photos section rather than the Files section?
Guest guest
Jai Shelly : > Do you have the list set up to strip the attachments from emails? I do. Some people are concerned about virius and others may not want the attachments. So, if someone puts the pictures, or any other document, in the Files section, then those interested can download tem.
