Namah Shivaya

Dear Keval,

Re: Vibhuti- usually Indians, esp south indians use

vibhuti as a religious sign- in our culture we use it

everyday- everyday , right from my childhood we dont

leave home without it. After the morning bath, we

usually go into the puja room , apply vibhuti on our

foreheads before starting our prayers and it is

usually on the forehead for most opf the day. The

vibhuti , to me, and to many others, has many sacred

associations- so i wear the vibhuti in the night too

before gouing to sleep- since in our tradition it is

so common , i think they hand it out to us indians.

But in the west there isnt such a practice, so they

dont give them vibhuti - people are not used to it and

may find this white powder rather strange . It may not

have the same sacred associations for them as it has

for me....

However, Amma does give vibhuti packets to westerners

if they ask for it- I have seen Amma give vibhuti to

westerners too.

To Amma, there are no westerners and easterners- we

are all Her children, equal to Her. But since

westerners dont use vibhuti in general, She doesnt

give it to them. Its that simple really . It is just

an indian custom and not a 'compulsory' spiritual

practice to wear vibhtui.
