There is interest in the Perumal Swami story, I see from the responses.

Perumal was the manager of the Skandashram, where Maharshi first lived on the

Hill. He was a bit arrogant and started bossing the Maharshi around. This

may be why Maharshi left it and moved down the hill, to live near his

mother's shrine; it has rarely been said in books that this may well be the

reason he did move down the hill. the ashram then grew up around him. At a

later point, as things matured, Perumal Swami was replaced by another man to

manage the ashram. This did not go well with Perumal, who by that time was

not even living at the ashram, but rather at the enormous temple nearby. He

then began suing the Maharshi, several times. Luckily, Maharshi did not have

to go to court, but the court came to him, and he had to answer a lot of

questions from an arrogant lawyer. The lawyer and his son, by the way, soon

met a terrible end, which may be what happens when you mess with the Guru.

Perumal argued that he was still the manager of the ashram and was improperly

removed. Finally, he tried to move back to the ashram in the middle of the

night; but he was not accepted. His health deteriorated profoundly and he

died miserably. It was said that he reincarnated as a bird, and lived at the

ashram. Everyone, buy the book. I met Godman and he really is THE authority

on Maharshi. He will be remembed long after Osborne is forgotten. He lives

by faith in God to provide for his needs, so buying his book is doubly

important. Avram

heh, I quoted him sayin:

"There is no help in change of environment. The obstacle is the mind.

It must be got over whether at home or in the forest. If you can do it

in the forest, why not at home? Therefore, why change your

environment? Your efforts can be made even now - in whatever

environment you are now. The environment will never change according

to your desire'."

the yin-yang of life = )
