Afterwards, Amma made a house call, and was in San Francisco International Airport at around 2 pm. I was there too, and she chatted with us for half an hour. She said that only fear will motivate a person in the Kali Yuga (the demonic epoch that we are in now). Telling a person who is watching TV to come away and partake of the nectar of immortality will not pull him away. Telling him that the house is on fire will send him running. That is the bhakti of the demon Kamsa, who was finally liberated by Krishna. Someone asked then why fear is co-mingled with bhakti, which he thought was essentially pure love. Amma's response was that pursuit of the final goal, such as success in an examination, may be motivated by love, but on the way, fear of failure motivates one to study without wasting time.
