Guest guest
Although I have learned Amma's 108 names, I wouldn't recommend it unless Amma is your ishta devata or you plan to lead satsang chantings (reason I learned them). The words and rhythm's of her mantras are unusual and a bit difficult for people new to chanting. Amma has always recommended the 1000 names of Devi for both material and spiritual upliftment, and for those wanting the benefits of chanting them and learning a little easier, I'd recommend the stotra (verse) form because of the even rhythm and simpler (more common words). Chanting the verse form is also less of a concentration strain (90 minutes for list form versus 45 minutes or less for verse form). To hear a sample of what the verse form sounds like, look to the last part of "Amma Amma Taye". The first two verses of the 1000 names are used as an additional 2 verses to that song ("Srii Maataa, Srii Maharaagnii, Sriimat Simhaasaneshvarii...") which in total make up the first 9 names of the 1000. Premarupa was kind enough send me a copy of the stotra form a while back when the discussion came up, and I'd be glad to send Robin a copy along with the text if you are interested Robin, just email me at tomgull tom p.s. wasn't a certain someone banned from this list who's recently re-appeared? Guest guest
Nice idea---How do we make such a contribution? Guest guest
Ammachi, Robin Wilson <lilymoonjewel> wrote: > > On another note......if the group could discuss what they think would be easier for me......then let me know......:-) Robin, by being "new" to chanting, I mean being new to chanting things besides bhajans. Chanting longer things like stotras and naamaavali's are not usually chanted by most sadhaks, because they don't understand the benefits, don't want to make the effort of learning them, and consider them to be too "Hindu", and they want to remain just "spiritual". Here's a breakdown of Devi's names and what's available: 108 Names of Maataa Amritaanandamayi (someone recommended you learn this, I don't recommend it because of non-common words used). Recording found at MA Center website and other places on net, and on Mantra Maala tape and Puja tape. The version on the Puja tape has it in call-and-response format like at satsang. 108 Names of Devi (Ammachi version) This is a list of names taken from the 1000 names, the simplest 108 names. You'll find these often chanted as Devi's 108 at Ammachi satsangs, originally chosen as a simple form of archana. No recordings that I know of. Text available at satsang or in Puja book. 108 Names of Devi (Traditional) Most common 108 names of Devi. Text available online and on CD-ROM From Untruth to Truth. Recordings available on Mantra Maala tape and on same CD-ROM mentioned. These 108 names of Devi are also a bit difficult for newbies because of the length of the names and uncommon words. 1000 Names of Devi (Lalitha): Naamaavali (list) and Stotra (verse) forms. Highly praised as being very auspicious and very beneficial for both material and spiritual benefits. This is of course, from a "Shakta" (worshipper of Shakti/Goddess) point of view. Vaishnavites would argue otherwise. Chanting this is a bit more of an undertaking, but has much more benefits than Amma's 108 in my opinion. 300 Names of Devi (known as Trishati): Supposedly even more auspicious and effective than the 1000 names, but ideally intended for advanced sadhaks of Devi. 108 and 1000 names of Baalaa Devi (Devi as 16 year old girl): Tantric deity with her own mantras and meditation.
