Guest guest
When I received my mantra in San Ramon, when mother gave her consent to receive on on Devi Bhava, we were sent to meet with a senior Brahmachari/ni to hear what it means to receive one, and we were asked to decide what our Ishta Devata (preferred form of the Divine) we wanted the mantra to represent. We wrote our Ishta Devata on a piece of paper and presented it to the Swami next to Amma, who then translated that name of God to her. She then decided spontaneously what mantra and chanting it my ear 3 times. I was then to go repeat what I heard to the Swami, who pulled that mantra, written in English transliteration, out of a file, and then would then go over the pronunciation and explain it's relevant meaning. If he didnt' get a chance to explain the meaning then, we also met in a small group with another senior disciple who would look at our mantra if we requested and explain it's general meaning to us. That was my experience, in the US! Blessings, Connie > Whenever someone request Mother for mantra, with her consent > you will be guided to another swami, who is delegated by mother > for mantra. Guest guest
The drama around receiving your mantra from Amma seems different from year to year, or at least changes every so often. There were times when you were supposed to ask and get permission first, then another year where it was completely your choice to get in line and then given a short talk by a sevite, who wrote down your ista devata (and yes it could be just the name of Jesus or Mary, etc.) then the swami or brahmachari nearest Amma would say the name of the isht devata to Amma so she'd know which mantra to give. Only the most common mantras were pre-printed. Then last year, you were supposed to ask first then Amma wanted you to spend some time on the stage behind her for a while before receiving the talk about mantras. It's different for everyone. tom
