Guest guest
A yantra is a special sacred geometric design. It has the presence and power of the deity. Sometimes yantras are drawn on the earth. Sometimes people have yantras inscribed in copper or silver plate for use in their puja room. The yantra is used in doing puja (ceremonial worship) instead of a statue of God. My first introduction to yantra came before I knew much about what they were. I had seen the designs that Indian woman make outside the front door to their homes in the morning after cleaning the door and area around the entryway. Sometime they are called kolam. Sometimes they are called rangooli. These are like special prayers comprised of images instseda of words. They welcome the goddess into the home every day. One year for Navaratri I decided to decorate our apartment doorway every mornng by cleaning it and making such designs. Every day I made a more elaborate design. On the last day I carefully made a Shri Chakra. When I closed the last triangle, I felt a tremendous fource rise from the yantra. Then I understood that this was not a kolam design. This was the goddess Herself. I was very upset because I didn't know whether to erase it. I didn't want anyone to step on it. On the other hand, THERE SHE WAS!! I didn't want to brush Her away either. I left the Shri Chakra there. Even though there was another apartment door at right angles to ours, no one stepped on the Shri Chakra on their way in or out all day long. A homa is a Vedic fire ritual. Everything about them must be done just so, thus only men who are especially trained exaclty how to do them are allowed to peform them. Homas are performed for many purposes. Usually you will see at least one in connection with a wedding. One of the nice things about Amma's group is the lack of lots of complicated rituals that often exclude people and the presence of simple ways to remember God that include everyone. Guest guest
I don't think Amma gives mantras over the Internet... An important part of mantra <diksha> (initiation) is when the Guru whispers the mantra in your ear. Your best bet is to find out when Amma is appearing near you, and going directly to her during Devi Bhava to ask for a mantra. Seven years ago, when I took darshan of Amma, I mentioned to one of the assistants that I wanted to receive a mantra. After my hug from Amma, they took me aside and asked me my chosen deity. I'd known for some time that I was a Shakta (Goddess-worshipper), but I found (somewhat to my surprise) myself saying, "Sarasvati is my <ishtadevata>," The assistants looked at each other with a perplexed expression. "We have computer printed slips with most of the frequently asked for mantras on them," they explained, "But Sarasvati is not asked for very frequently." The result? I got a hand-written slip with a mantra to Sarasvati on it! Perhaps one reason that Sarasvati is not so popular as a chosen deity is due to the popular belief that she and her sister Lakshmi do not get along. So, devotees of Sarasvati (devi of the arts and scholarship) are often neglected by Lakshmi (devi of wealth and abundance). Only Ganesha can get these irascible sisters to behave well with each other. Someone on this list wrote that most devotional mantras take the form of "Om [deity name with dative ending] namah." But Ammachi uses her psychic skills to add at least one <bija> mantra before the deity name, that personalizes the mantra for you. (Bijas are single syllable sounds of power that act as "seeds" to plant the deity's presence.) Mantras are supposed to remain secret -- you don't tell anyone else your mantra. A female friend told Amma that she wanted a mantra, but would let Amma choose it. Then my friend insisted I analyse the mantra, try to translate it for her. The mantra Amma gave her was simply a string of <bijas>, many I never had heard before, with no deity name! -- Len/ Kalipadma On Fri, 20 Dec 2002 15:32:28 -0800 (PST) Robin Wilson <lilymoonjewel writes: > > I do however have a question I have been looking in to mantras and > think that I like Saraswati....
