Pack a "cheap" real soap kind, which > you can also purchase > at the Indian store at the ashram. > To the above I would add: Padlock for locking your bags and for locking your room in cheap hotels with flimsy door locks. It might not look cool to wear socks with sandals, but it's a good idea to avoid the filth and s*** in the streets. I mostly wore runners. Don't bother packing extra batteries for your flashlight and camera. Duracells and Engergizers are easily available, and the price is printed on the pack so there's no haggling. Don't bother bringing your own toilet paper. It's not that hard to find in India, though the quality may not be up to the North American standard. However, you may end up preferring the Indian style toilet (where you squat like a baseball catcher over a floor-level hole). I won't go into the details of what Indians traditionally use instead of paper. If you're planning some tantric activities, or are traveling with your husband/wife/boyfriend/girlfriend/significant other...bring your own condoms!!!
