Guest guest
Is this really what the world needs? Comments :-) Om Namah Shivaya Ravi ------------ Guru Proposes `Yogic Flying' As Antidote for Global Terrorism NEWSDAY The Indian guru who brought transcendental meditation to America says he has the antidote to global terrorism. In his first public remarks in seven years, the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi said he is summoning 40,000 yogis in India, who are trained in meditation as well as the practice of "yogic flying," to create a spiritual force field that will produce world peace and harmony. All he needs to pull it off, he says, are a few "peace-loving billionaires in America" willing to donate $1 billion to build housing for the group and pay their expenses. "Today I'm challenging America," said the guru, who taught meditation to the Beatles and Mick Jagger 30 years ago. "If I had the support of money, I have all that is needed to ... completely stop all this violence." The fund-raising campaign, which began more than a year before the Sept. 11 terrorist attack, had raised $40 million by late last week, said Mario Orsatti, a spokesman for the Institute of Science, Technology and Public Policy at the Maharishi University of Management in Fairfax, Iowa. I'm dissappointd to hear of this "plea for money" from the Maharishi as a necessary component for his collaborative peace plan. Seems to me this undertaking can be accomplished (if the yogis are so accomplished) without the need of so much money. Lisa

How, exactly, does one create the physical infrastructure (housing, etc.) for groups of thousands of pandits without money? For that matter, how would Amma build a hospital without money? Granted, there are some serious accountability issues with respect to how MMY's family handles the TM organizations finances, but let's not lose touch with the reality that land and buildings cost money, even in India. I think 1 billion dollars is a bit high...just my opinion. By the way, it's not thousands of pandits, necessarily, that are being housed...but yogis. Yogis who've done tapas don't require elaborate housing...just something simple. As one person has already suggested, you can't buy peace, so let them start with, as somebody else mentioned (I think Peter) with the 40 million they've already raised and see what they can do with that. I think the amount raised so far is about $87 million, and I agree that they should put up or shut up. They've been making these kinds of claims for years, and now it's time for action instead of words. I would think $87 mil would buy ten times as much in India as it would in the west, so they should have more than enough to demonstrate whether their claims are valid or not.
