The program below aired on ABC's Radio National.

That's the Australian Broadcasting Corp., not the U.S.

network.

"The Spirit of Things"

with Rachael Kohn

on Sunday 16/2/2003

Ring of Fire

Summary:

To Hindus attending the Sri Venkateswara Temple in

Helensburgh, New South Wales, fire is a familiar

symbol. Scholar and teacher, Michael Comans, takes us

on a tour of the many shrines in the Temple, and we

speak with worshippers, the architect, and one of the

Brahmin priests.

Details or Transcript:

The Lord Siva dances in a ring of fire, and fire

rituals are performed during the construction of this

temple which is aiming to be the largest in Australia.

At the centre of this huge complex is a shrine lit by

flames flickering in oil lamps.
