So finally reached for my journal to share just a few lines from our January 2000 stay there: "My ego, relentless as sand, goes everywhere, gets into everything. Sweep it out today, it returns tomorrow. Put rugs and mats in front of your door, it's in your bed by night." Some of us were just talking today about how Amritapuri was once mostly swampy land that Amma and her earliest followers filled by carrying buckets and buckets of sand from the seashore, a distance of about 2 blocks away. At the time it must have seemed as daunting as hugging 21 million people. And this, just in: We are Her oysters, She is our sand. I have often had similar thoughts but have never fleshed out the allegory with the skill of a Ravi Verma (a famous painter from Kerala who was known for his 'life- like' works of landscapes and other subjects) which is what you have done.
