I am confused about this country being at war. I

remember 9/11 and other terrorist incidents in the

last few years. Yes, people died, yes Americans died.

Yes I am American. I walk on the blood of ancestors

who died for me to be here now. Somehow living on

concrete has made me detached from my mother earth and

how precious she is.

Which is to say, as an American citizen I support the

men and women who fight in our name, even though I

don't support the reasons for the fight.

So my confusion is that Amma teaches peace, tolerance

and compassion should be extended to all the beings of

this world and all the other worlds and yet I live in

the country that is killing people in my name.

Does anyone have thoughts on this? Just as I was

writing this down, the answer came that I should pray

for both sides. Is that the answer?

Dear Supriti Omenka Nnadi

My feeling is we should pray for peace among all beings in all places

and at all times. If it is of any help, I wish to share this piece on

war which I will enter below. It is from a question and answer

session held in 1973 by my first guru. It may give you another

perspective. Om Namah Shivaya:

MARK M.: Please speak to us on the importance of war, It seems that

until only recently it was always considered to be man's noblest

occupation. Both Eastern and Western Epics and holy books are filled

with wars. The history of of the world is mainly the history of wars.

Today we live under the threat of the ultimate war. What can we think

of this? How do we relate to nonviolence?

BABA: Why should you be under the shadow of any fear? Even if there

were no war, are we going to live forever? There are many countries

which do not get involved in Wars. Do the people there enjoy

everlasting life?

God is performing three functions constantly: creation, sustenance,

and destruction. War is nothing but the destructive aspect of God.

The wars that were fought in ancient times, particularly in ancient

India, were fought under certain principles. I am not talking about

modern wars. In those days inhuman tactics were not used. Sources of

drinking water were not poisoned, children and old men were not

massacred and cities and towns were not set on fire at night. In the

Mahabharata certain principles relating to war were laid down. A

warrior must not kill women, he must not kill children, he must

particularly take care of pregnant women, and he must not kill the

aged. Warriors were supposed to fight only with warriors.

Modern war is, however, very different. It doesn't seem to follow any

principles. Just as man changes his character according to the age he

lives in, wars also change their character according to the age in

which they are fought. Whether a war is just or unjust, it springs

from attachment and aversion. It springs from desire. There have been

so many wars in the past; why should you be scared of future wars?

Whatever is inevit- able will happen. If a war has to happen, it will

happen; nobody can prevent it.

But first you should think about the war going on inside you, and

that war is far more destructive than any outer war. The war between

India and Pakistan was confined to a certain area and it lasted for a

certain length of time. Even a nuclear war will not last long. The

war inside you lasts all the time, and it is far more dangerous than

any outer war.

You should not worry about outer wars; worry about the inner war. The

irony of your life is that you want peace, but what you get inside is

agitation; you want love, but what you feel inside is hatred. You

want serenity, but what you find inside is disturbance. First you

should understand this contradiction and try to remove it from your

life.

It all depends on what the trend of the time is. There is a time when

there is a surge of creative activity, with scientists, engineers,

and architects building up things; and then there comes a time for

destruction, when bombs are manufactured and whatever has been built

up is destroyed. So there are doers of good as well as doers of evil

in this world. It has been like this from time immemorial, and it

will continue to be like this until the end of the world.

For this reason one should take refuge in discrimination and try to

find out the means to save oneself. Lord Krishna says to Arjuna in

the Gita that this world is transitory and he should become aware of

this and contemplate the inner Self. The world doesn't have much

value, it may end any day. So you should concentrate on the inner

Self. One wonders how many kings and warriors and artists and writers

have appeared on the scene of this world and disappeared. Some of

them were creative while others were destructive, but none of them

survived.

There was a poet- saint, a very good poet-saint called Narayana and

he says that one should be aware of two things in the world. The

first is the Lord, and the second is death.

who knows what the answer is? god knows but god has a

wide view with a humongous perspective . . . i am

german and my heart goes out to both sides of men and

women and childeren out there for sure. but what is

this 'in our name'? i surely do not want to use

ammachis forum here as a political one, but we all

have to raise our voice in order to create another

'superpower'. let's not watch when syria and iran will

be invaded by the megalomaniac bush admin. there is

this saying: 'as long as the fire is burning it'll

generate heat.' and i think this is exactly what the

bush gov. relies upon within the american public. only

public american opposition will be powerful enough to

stop this insane cabinet in wahington. everybody else

is just a puppet for them. peace! jai ma! lokah

Great idea! Let's not do that. I totally disagree with your sentiments, but

have kept silent until this time. I voted for President Bush and am sick of

seeing him criticized in this supposedly "spiritual" forum. Not every Amma

devotee toes one political line. It could be that I'm mistaken, but it could

also be that you are.

dear kutti kutty,

i appreciate your honesty and your courage to speak up

for your president. i agree with you that it's a not a

good idea making this forum political. though i have

been thinking lately politics have something in common

with spirituality. isn't it a dialogue? isn't it about

talking to each other, sometimes also arguing in order

to come to fruitful solutions, but mainly trying to

make things better? not only in the outer world --

also the dialogue with your inner self -- the search

and desire for peace, love, happiness, ... is it a

matter of me being mistaken or you being mistaken, you

think? what if we are both a litttle bit mistaken and

both a little bit right?

i feel threatened/scared by people who are stuck to

their metaphors. people who create their own right and

wrong and who do not leave room for dialogue. you can

be with me or against me, that doesn't make none of us

a better person :-) lokah samastah sukhino bhavantu.

Om Namah Shivaya,

Im not taking sides but this is just a sample of what

one side thinks. Im sure the other side will also have

their own justification (defense, blah blah).

May Amma show the leaders the 'right' path to resolve

the conflict and to stop (brainwashed?) innocents on

all sides from getting sacrificed because of a few

people's stubbornness.

THE LETTER

------

A California mother whose son is right now in Kuwait

poised to knock Saddam's block off, wrote her son

asking how he would feel if she joined other relatives

of service members in an anti-war demonstration in

Hollywood last month.

After reading her son's response, she elected not to

participate.

************************************

Dear Mom:

It's really your decision to march if you want to or

not. You are the one who has to decide if what we are

doing out here is right or not. My opinion is not

yours.

I do, however, have things I would like for you and

Grandma and everyone else at home to know.

I am a United States soldier. I was sworn to defend my

country against all enemies, foreign and domestic.

People may not agree with the things we are ordered to

do. I would like to address those people by telling

them that terroris! m is not only a threat to us as Am

ericans, but to many other innocent people in the

world.

What type of country would we be if we didn't defend

the rights and freedoms of others, not because they're

Americans, but how about just because they're human?

We live in a country where people feel secure with

their daily lives. They do business like usual and

don't worry about the thought of terrorism actually

happening to them. The people of 9-11 thought the

same thing. We now know that it can happen to anyone

at any time.

Yet as Americans we're afraid of losing our soldiers

to defend our security. I can only speak for myself

when I say that my life is an easy expense to ensure

that my family and friends can live in peace.

I strongly believe in what we are doing and wish you

were here to see for yourselves the honor and

privilege that American soldiers aboard this ship are

feeling, knowing that we are going to be a part of

something so stro! ng and so meaningful to the

sa fety of our loved ones.

Then you would know what this potential war is about.

We will stand tall in front of terrorism and defeat

it. We as soldiers are not afraid

of what may happen. We are only afraid of Americans

not being able to understand why we are here. I ask

for your courage as Americans to be strong for us.

I ask for your understanding in what we believe is

right. I ask for your support in what we are sworn to

do: defend our country and the life of all. We will

succeed in our task and will end the threat of

terrorism in our back yard.

We will also end the threat of terrorism in our

neighbors'. We have to remind ourselves of what this

country stands for: life, liberty and justice for all.

In order to maintain those rights we have to stop the

threat of terrorism.

I am proud to be here. I will be coming home, but not

until I know that it's going to be safe for all

Americans and for everyone I l! ove. My

family is first. My co untry is where they live. I

will defend it !

P.S. Mom, please send this to everyone who has a hard

time understanding why we are here. Ask the paper to

put what I've said in a column so that others will

know why we are here and what we are here for.

I love you all and will be home soon. I left my

address so that if anyone feels like writing to let me

know how they feel, they can.

Don't you think this is slightly unfair. After all, Amma has told us

we should try to understand the other person's point of view as well

instead of coming out and judging so harshly.
