Navratras Begin

United with Shakti, Shiva is endowed with the power to

create the universe. Otherwise, He is incapable of

even movement. Therefore, who except those endowed

with great merits acquired in the past can be

fortunate enough to salute or praise Thee, Mother

Divine, you who are the adored One of Hari, Hara and

Virinci...

 

 

 

Verse 1

 

 

 

Gathering a minute particle of dust from Thy lotus

feet, Brahma the creator brings into being this

universe —limitless and mysterious. The sustainer,

Vishnu, as Adisesha, somehow supports this universe

with His thousand hoods.

 

And Hara, the destroyer, crushing it to powder, rubs

the ashes all over His body at the time of

dissolution.

 

 

 

Verse 2

 

 

 

Look at Kamadeva and his tools — how ineffective

they are, by themselves. His bow is made of flowers,

the bow-string is a line of honeybees; he has only

five flower arrows; his minister is the undependable

spring season — his battle chariot is the shifting

breeze, and above all, he is Ananga, the formless

one...

 

 

 

Verse 6

 

 

 

May the Divine Mother Tripurasundari, the pride, the

‘I’-sense of Shiva the destroyer, vouchsafe Her

presence before us — the Mother with her slender waist

girdled with tinkling bells, her frame slightly bent

in the middle by the weight of Her breasts, her face

resembling the autumnal moon, her hand sporting a bow,

arrow, noose and goad...
