Guest guest
I found the item below on the Kerala page of the http://www.newindpress.com site. I wonder if this child's family has tried going to the AIMS hospital's Heart Institute? Is anyone in India on this list connected with AIMS, or can contact the family (see last paragraph)? Jai Ma! Keval +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ 5-Year-old boy caged in a cageless heart KOCHI: Five-year-old Anand Mahadevan doesn't know why others call him a 'rib-less boy'. Nor does he understand why the skin over his left chest balloons whenever a spate of dry cough disturbs him. This enigma to medical science would love to roll in the sand, climb trees and fight with his only sister. But seldom gets a chance. For, his parents never allow Anand to enjoy the lighter side of life fearing the severe damage that even a small accident can cause to his tender heart which is not protected by a rib cage. "Keep your hands here. You can feel his heartbeat," says his father Mahadevan, a carpenter. "We're worried. A small impact, doctors say, would harm his lungs and other systems. We cannot even allow him to play with anyone," he says while controlling a bubbling Anand from indulging in any mischief. Mahadevan and Latha have taken their son to all eminent paediatricians in Kerala. "But none of them has come across such a case. They refer him to another doctor and we get the same reply," he says. Medical reports state that Anand's left rib cage has not fully developed. Except for a few ribs near the diaphragm, the rest remains a weak frame of cartilage. His parents came to know of the problem only after his birth as it was a normal pregnancy. "He is active and healthy except for some breathing trouble. We just want to know who can treat him and where it can be treated," says Mahadevan. Till he finds a doctor who can suggest a remedial measure, Mahadevan is planning to mould a plastic covering that can absorb shocks. He sincerely hopes someone somewhere will find a solution to his son's ailment. His address: Mahadevan, Lakshmi Nivas, Vechoor PO, Vaikom _ 686144. Phone: 04829-275519 (pp).
