Final Thoughts on Leaving India

(written at the Trivandrum Airport)

My final thoughts on leaving India are these: Life

is a song and if you are a singer you must sing it.

There are times when your throat is sore or your

feet hurt, it's too hot and the perspiration streams

down your face. There are times when the long,

operatic passages are difficult to sing, and you

can't honestly say you even like the music, but

you are a singer and you sing. Even when it's a

form of agony to be doing what you are doing, you

still sing for the pure joy of singing and know

when you're done that what you've done is really

YOU. There is no separation between the song and

the singer.

As a child taken from her mother's breast, as a

singer separated from her song, so do I feel about

leaving my Mother and India. I am a child separated

from her Mother, a singer separated from her Song.

I do not know why it should be so, only that it is.

As difficult as India is for westerners (tapas!),

being here (at Amma's place) sings in my soul.

My eyes fill spontaneously with tears at the

thought of leaving. I have for comfort Amma's

words, "Don't leave, come back," which I will

certainly do at the first opportunity. Jai Ma!

Thanks for writing these. I think I missed a bunch of them, but I really

enjoyed the ones I read.
