This program aired today on ABC Radio National (the

Australian Broadacsting Corp. not the U.S. network)

"The Religion Report"

Wednesday 30 April 2003

In Nigeria's recent elections, President Olusegun

Obasanjo won an overwhelming but controversial

victory, beating his main opponent Muhammadu Buhari by

a two-to-one margin. But EU observers pronounced the

elections "deeply flawed", and opposition parties have

rejected the results. Are we about to witness an

intensification of the sectarian Christian/Muslim

violence that has killed 10,000 Nigerians over the

past four years? Also: Indian holy woman Mata

Amritanandamayi - better known as Amma - has been

compared to Mahatma Gandhi and Mother Teresa, and

imparts her message of unconditional love by hugging

everyone who comes to see her. But her visit to

Australia - planned for May 1st to 11th - has been

cancelled, owing to fear of SARS.

The part about Amma is near the end, about 25 minutes

into the half-hour program. After you've clicked on

the real audio link and downloaded the program, you

can drag the pointer on your real audio player to

25:00.

If you have a short wave radio, you can listen to

Radio Australia - in North America best frequency is

on 9580 kHz, early mornings (around 7:00 AM Eastern

time, 1100 UTC)
