Guest guest
Om namaha shivaia dear Robin, I try to explain better what I feel, in my case (I cannot talk for others or tell there’s a rule) I didn’t felt a stronger bond with Amma ONLY after I got the name, it was more a “public” recognition, something like when you pass an exam, you know the matter anyway, because you’ve studied it, but when you pass it, you get a “yes”, but you don’t know the matter better ONLY because you have passed the exam…. I hope you understand what I mean, I feel I cannot tell this very well! It could also be that Amma (or a Guru) creates a stronger bond with a name, the same way this happens with a mantra, but I don’t know if this is true or only my thinking. The stronger bond for me was created in a different way, with the so many small (BIG!) things that happen around (or far away) HER and I feel them! I mean, of course a name/recognition is a stronger bond, but one should NOT rely ONLY on a name, it may help (in depening the connection with the Divine – at least by me – because it is a continuous remembering: I always notice a difference in my thinking when someone addresses me with Prasida instead of Carla), but it is not the most important thing. I have no idea if it is possible to get a name by mail, but know one friend who received it in a dream. Guest guest
Namaste, I realize that I am entering the naming debate a bit late to be throwing in my two cents, but in my own experience, I consider Amma to be an emodiment of the Divine Mother, and once I grew to love and know her as a mother figure, I thought it should be only natural to ask that a mother would name her child. I plan to ask Amma for a spiritual name during this summer's retreat in my area, and I am looking forward to this new identity borne of the Divine Mother's own inspiration. It's lovely to feel that I am Amma's child, and maybe that's why so many of us have asked for a name. Shanti, shanti... Guest guest
Jai Brianna and Brianna. And thanks for taking the risk and sharing your tender and wise thoughts. May it inspire others who mostly read and don't write to jump in here. Things always pick up as Amma's US tour starts. The more the merrier! Less than a week now and She'll be in Seattle. Guest guest
Om Namah Shivayah To Brianna Jewett and all of Amma's children; I felt inspired to add one more comment to the ever-continuing topic of names, which is that as each of us travel our spiritual paths, it is so important to honor and respect the actions that others take in the spirit of deepening their connection to God. Even if it doesn't seem right for us, it is definately counterproductive to our own spiritual development to spend our mental energy passing judgement on anyone for any reason. I am often challenged by this inherant urge to judge. I think we live in a society that nurtures this state of mind, and teaches us to prefer this, or not accept that. Something really struck me in a recent issue of Yoga International. They did an article on the wisdom of Swami Vivekananda, the first Hindu renunciate to come to the US. Swami was very adament about being true to the Self, to the highest truth within and not being influenced by the culture telling you what to think. "You must struggle to be individuals-strong, standing on your own feet, thinking your own thoughts, realizing your own Self."
