Coming up on The Ark

Wednesday 14 May 2003

• Unholy Cow

The streets of India are crowded with cars and cows

because Hindus believe that the cow is sacred and must

not be killed for food. But leading historian D. N.

Jha shows in his book The Myth of the Holy Cow that

Brahmanical and Buddhist diets included beef. Why did

it change and why is Dr. Jha's life in danger for

telling the truth about this sacred cow?

I don't have to mention that this Hindu revisionist

program aired on the Australian Broadcasting Corp.,

not the U.S. network. You know that from my previous

posts, mate :)

I don't think there is such thing as Brahmanical Diet.

For instance, Kashmiri Brahmins take beaf, Bengali and

Koankani Brahmins take fish, These are their natural

diets, owing to the their environment. Besides these,

there are many Hindu groups who are strict vegetarian.

In a strict sense, Taking beaf or not taking beaf as

nothing to do with Sanathana Dharma. If people can

consume mutton, chicken what difference does it make

eating beaf (they are already consuming meat). Does

"not taking meat" ensures Self-Realisation, I don't

think so? what matters most is wether the person doing

his sadhana or not.
