I had to cancel my trip to see Amma in Dallas where I was planning on

asking her for a mantra. I will have to wait until next year to do

so, but in the meantime I'd like to work on my mantra practice.

My problem is choosing a mantra and sticking with it until then! I

have chanted the maha mantra (hare krisna hare krishna hare hare

etc.), but I don't identify with Krishna as much as Siva, or the

Unmanifest Truth. I find myself repeating Mata Amritanandamayi Devi

over and over sometimes, but that is more out of comfort.

Anyone know mantras for:

Siva

Devi/Kali

Amma

Unmanifest Deity

If you do and can explain its meaning, I'd greatly appreciate the

help.

Thank you!

Namaskaram Brother,

The best way to choose a mantra if you do not have anyone to guide is

to use astrology- find out who your istadeva is as per your astrology

(consult a vedic astrologer for this), that deva is the most likely

to give you the quickest results.

A good book for beginners is to use Mantras by Thomas Ashely Farrand-

once you find out who your istadeva is preferably chant a simple

mantra(without beejas) a few million times before you meet Amma next

year for mantra diksha. For people who start on mantra sadhana, there

is the overwhelming tendency to change a mantra or deva- usually this

is a result of inability to face subconscious filth coming out - the

best way to avoid this is to make a firm resolve to do a certain

number of chantings of the mantra every day; and when you have to

temptation to jump mantras, do so after your required quota of the

first mantra has been done. Good luck to you!

Warm regards

I also forgot to add; regardless of whatever mantra you chant you can

always chant the Lalitha Sahasranama- this is a great hymn with a lot

of powerful mantras in it, that has been made available to humanity

by our Beloved Amma and is one of the best for material as well as

spiritual progress.

I think most people do not know the historical use of this mantra- as

per scripture, Hayagriva(a horse headed avatar of Vishnu) and

Dakshinamurti(Siva as the supreme teacher) is supposed to have issued

a dictate that only very select people and that too after having

reached a certain stage after chanting other mantras, were allowed to

chant the LS; indeed upto 40 years ago, most people were afraid of

chanting this scripture for fear of making mistakes. We must thank

our Beloved AMMA for making this available to all and the remove the

shroud of fear/exclusivity around this mantra.

Those who chant the mantra 5-10 times at least everyday will not lack

in anything that life can offer.

namah shivaya msolitz,

even just chanting AMMA AMMA AMMA is one of the

greatest mantras you could use!

you can always also go with the popular mantras like

'om namah shivaya' (salutations to shiva or i'll bow

to the eternal truth)

'om amriteshwaryai namah' (salutations to the immortal

goddess or i'll bow to amma!)

'om parashaktyai namah' (salutations to the supreme

energy)

in fact, to get a really great vibe for mantras and if

you like to chant for comfort (that's how i understood

you) then you should really get the SRI LALITA

SAHASRANAMA book (ammachi.org), as yogaman wrote you

already. here you have a thousand mantras all

dedicated to the divine mother! for practice you

should get a small archana book, also at ammachi.org,

but the LS book explains all the meanings of the

mantras. chanting the divine names would be great

practice and give you even more comfort. it takes

about an hour to chant these. you could also start

with the 108 names of devi (those are contained within

the 1000 names) but take only 10 minutes to chant. it

depends on how you make time. hope this was some help.
