greetings brothers and sisters in amma

i had always admired the 5 metal mantra bracelets that the bookstore sells

during amma's tours...So, at san ramon i purchased one that i had amma

place upon my wrist during devi bhava (how thrilling was that??!!)

the only problem is that now it seems to be turning my wrist 5 different

shades of green, apparently my skin's reactions to the metals.

has anyone else had this problem, and what might the cure be? A woman i

work with said to coat the inside of the bracelet with clear nailpolish,

but i don't know if that is appropriate, given that amma placed in on my wrist.

i would also recommend clear nail polish . . . but

maybe you can go to a jeweller store and ask if

there's something else which they'd recommend? isn't

the insiide of the bracelet made of copper? you have

to use some coating if your skin reacts like that i

think. . . just imagine the coating is a protection

from amma for you, which makes it appropriate! ;-)

i think you are of the pitta constitution/the bracelet is exposed a

lot to water/moisture.

this is pretty normal- see copper develops a greenish coating when

exposed to moisture(called verdigris or something like that)- that is

just transferred to your skin, i do not think that it is a reaction(i

too have the same problem when i wear copper).

the bracelet should not be tightly fitting over your wrist and should

be kept as dry as possible. (and of course the usual disclaimer-

please consult you medical practitioner.....)

Everyone's perspiration is different. The green is probably

oxidation/tarnish of the copper. Try regular cleaning with lemon

juice (the longer it sits before rinsing the better) with some ground

tumeric (yellow powdered spice) as a mild abrasive.

My father, who refuses to take his bracelet off for any reason, has

this problem. I think it's because he gets it wet in the shower--He

has green marks all down his arm and I tell him--"look, you need to

wash it off"

but he says the more green that gets on his arm the more good amma is

doing for him.

Certain people (like you, like me) whose skin is a particular Ph cause

copper to leave a green exudate (called <verdegris>) on their skin. That

should be the worst of your problems. Although many people swear that

wearing a copper bracelet (or a three-metal, or a five-metal -- one of

the metals is always copper) heals and improves their arthritic joints,

it worsened mine. Several years ago I bought a five-metal mantra

bracelet from Amma's bookstore, and it not only turned my wrist green, my

wrist swelled up like a balloon and began throbbing with arthritis pain!

Needless to say, I removed the bracelet immediately, cleaned it, and sold

it to a friend who had admired it. It caused my friend no problems when

he wore it. I've considered getting a solid silver mantra bracelet

(gold is beyond my meager income), but mostly I keep my mantras on the

tip of my tongue, rather than around my (still swollen) wrist.

Coating the inside of your bracelet with clear nailpolish will prevent

your wrist from turning green again. Let's assume that you aren't

allergic to nailpolish... Don't see how it would be "inappropriate,"

unless you feel that Amma <intends> you to have a green wrist?

Copper is heating. If you are already a fireball, like me, a copper

bracelet, or copper shyly hiding in a mix of silvery looking stuff,

will cause inflammation and swelling. A little ayurvedic tidbit.
