vibhuti (sacred ash), fantasized advice from Amarthya

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

it would be interesting to hear the different ways that any of you

use vibhuti.

 

Amma gave me a total of 3 packets of vibhuti this summer. When She

gave me the first packet, during darshan in Iowa, I kind of was

taken aback, and went WHAT! in my mind, and did not think much more

about it.The thought even came to my mind....maybe this is an

accident or something, or maybe Amma is just trying to be inclusive

with me, since it has not been so often that I could be in the hall

like everyone else, and go up and get darshan.

(About myself here....I would comment...."doubtful Sara, where is

your Faith. Amma Knows.")

 

My problem, in years past , has been that when the samll

packet is opened ,it has triggered physical problems in my brain

and respiratory system because of my illness, mulitple chemical

sensitivity (msc) .

 

Well, of course when Amma gave me two packets at the same time in

darshan in Chicago, it was clear that She knew what She was doing,

and was emphasizing the point with me.

 

So,the last evening in the program, I asked Br.Shantamrita how he

would advise me to use it, or how other devotees use the vibhuti

Amma gives them.

His answer went something like this:

"Amma sees that you have a lot of pain, ( I am on crutches, and do

have pain in my back,legs,feet,etc.), so you can make a paste with

it and put it on your legs or back, or where ever you have pain."

 

I think that in 1994 Amma told me to put a small bit of it on my

tongue. I did that for a period. That was before my mcs went from

being mild to very severe. My memory is a bit foggy about this,

and also other events from this time period, partly because I was

using a lot heavy pain medication just to get through each day.

 

Today the 3 packets of vibhuti I got this July, are in a tight tin

container in a room I am not often in, and I have not had the

courage to open a packet and begin to use it.

 

I say to muself here:

(as sister Amarthya , who is in contact with Swami Beyonditall,

might say to me)

"Oh Saradevi, Ye of little faith; get on with it and use it."

It is unusual for Holy Mother to give vibhuti to Her western children,

usually when She does so it is for a very special reason. In general, the

use will unfold itself in course of time as the wheels of karma roll on, it

will avert or ameliorate some kind of suffering for you.

Yes, it is all in one's attitude and faith. As with the discussion on rose

petals, the important thing is not so much in the physical objects

themselves, neither in their quantity nor in their duration, but in their

use - which is inherently transitory. In other words, it is the devotee's

application of these gifts in the right moment that makes the difference,

not the ongoing wearing or preservation of them for extended periods.

Perhaps you could apply a tiny bit of it momentarily as a paste (with

devotion) and then (with equal devotion) wash it off with holy water or

Ganges water.

Jai Ma, Sara!

 

It's hard to say if you have such a strong physical

reaction to the vibhuti, but obviously Amma wants you

to use it, so I'll share some of my favorite vibhuti

tricks.

 

As I've mentioned in earlier postings, I was raised

hindu by my dad, who was a devotee of Sri Sathya Sai

Baba, and when dad came back from India he brought a

LOT of vibhuti from his master, who had encouraged him

to use it every day.

 

We wore it on our forheads during bhajans and puja,

and also added a bit to our bathwater. We would add a

bit to whatever we were cooking, too. We also

sprinkled it across our threshold, and in the corners

of each room. A small amount went into the potted

plants in the house, and we scattered some around our

garden.

 

Basically, it's good to put it anywhere where you are.

While there are certainly traditional ways to use

sacred ash, there are basically no rules, except maybe

not to be utterly cavelier with it.

 

You must let us all know how it works out for you!

In the Summer of 1997 Mother gave me a total of seven packages of

vibhuti. When She gave me around the 6th package I looked at Her and

giggled. She gave me a very SERIOUS look, like "this isn't funny". So I

thought I'd better use it. Fortunately I do not have a negative reaction

to vibhuti. I used the vibhuti every day. I ate a little and rubbed it

on my body. I have a disabling chronic illness, so I used it wherever I

hurt. About eight months after She gave me the vibhuti I injured my back

quite severely. In fact, my back still gives me no end of trouble and I

can lift only about 2 pounds. I don't know what the whole thing was

about, but I have thought that She was protecting me from some of the

karma - like it could have been much worse.

 

There is a story I think in one of the "Awaken Children" books about

Mother giving some Holy water to a girl who was the girlfriend or fiancé

of a devotee. Actually Mother didn't give the girl the Holy water, she

poured it onto the ground. She said (and I'm paraphrasing) "Mother knew

that the girl wouldn't use the water so She poured it onto the ground,

since that would be better than giving the girl the water and her not

using it. Some difficulties may have been avoided if she had taken the

water, but this way the trouble can be lessened somewhat."

Our brother Ramial is correct.

Usually Amma does not give vibhuti to westerners, and when she does, it's

for very good reason.

 

How about making a paste with some holy water?

A thin paste with just a little vibhuti?

 

I use it after prayers in the morning.

I rub some on Amma's arms and shoulders in a picture of Her holding the

planet. Then I put some on the third eye of pictures of a few people for

whom I offer special prayers.

Then I put some on my own 3rd eye and any left on my tongue.
