Avram Dear Brother, I'm sure there are such techniques and I will be interested in reading other responses, but want to mention that it is said wearing rudraksha and pressing them between the fingers is helpful, as is soaking two overnight in clean water and drinking same daily in morning before eating or drinking anything else. Guest guest
Hi Avram, I don't "know" anything, but having done breath- watching (called Hong Sau in SRF) for years, I surely think that would work, since done with attention and practice, this technique causes the pulse and breathing both to slow tremendously. Guest guest
- sprose1 Ammachi Sunday, August 31, 2003 11:13 AM Re: Digest Number 920 Namaste, borthers and sisters, Avram, I checked "The Spiritual Science of Kriya Yoga" by Goswami Kriyananda and found a pranayama that is "excellent for alleviating high blood pressure." I can't vouch for it as I have the other extreme, but here are the instructions: THE DRAWING BREATH (Ujjaya) Begin in a meditative pose and do a stomach contraction; close the mouth and exhale completely thru the nose. Inhale slowly and completely whilep artially closing off the glottis (opening between vocal cords at the upper part of the wind pipe); this will cause air to rush past the glottis, producing a soft humming sound in the throat. The passage of the air is felt on the roof of the palate and makes a "s-a-a-a-" sound. You should definately be able to hear it. Do not bloat the abdominal wall while inhaling; it is important the the air only reach from the throat to the heart. As you inhale, imagine the air travelling from nose to throat to heart; upon exhaling, it should travel only from heart to throat and then to nose. When the lungs are full, form a chin lock contraction and hold as long as is comfortable for you. Release the chin lock and exhale slowly and steadily until the lungs are empty. The glottis should be half closed for this; this time the air should make a h-a-a--a sound. The exhalation can be thru one nostril or both- if just one, close the otehr with the thumb. Passage of outgoing air should be felt on the roof of the mouth. This is to be repeated three times, building over time to nine reps. Mystical benefits are supposed to include preservation of the body from decay, helps control dreams, and can be used to obliterate unconsciousness. As an additional FYI, the directives also indicate that this will help asthma. Best of luck with this and with other endeavors, physical and spiritual. Guest guest
Om Amriteswaryai Namaha! Alternate-nostril breathing, Ujai breathing and breath of fire are all supposed to be good for reducing blood pressure. Try not to go overboard with the breath of fire, as it will raise blood pressure as you practice. It's the long-term effects of regular pranayama practice that you want. You can find instructions for these at any good yoga website, try searching pranayama. Also, a kundalini yoga meditation, "into ecstacy" is supposed to help a lot. With fingers in chin mudra (thumb and index fnger joined), hands on knees with palms up, inhale through the nose in three equal parts. These should be short and powerful and the third one should leave the lungs filled. Holding your breath, turn the head slowly to the left, and exhale through the nose slowly as you turn the head back to center. Repeat on the other side, and just work at you own pace for one, three, or eleven minutes. Once eleven minutes feels really good, gradually work your way up to thirty-three minutes. Not only does this meditation benefit us physically, but it can really open the upper chakras and give you a generous helping of bliss! Enjoy!
