I recommend it, not only because it's free, but also because it's easy to learn - e.g. if you type lower case "a" you will get the Devanagari letter "a" (a figure 3 next to a vertical line -- the basis for the OM symbol). At http://www.geocities.com/SiliconValley/Lab/9988/ there are also free downloads of Gujarati, Gurmukhi (i.e. Punjabi), Bengali and Marathi fonts.
