It was my third trip to India. Previously, I was there for two 7 month long trips in 1990 and 1993. The facilities at the Ashram were basic but good. Everything was clean and neat. Essentials like filtered water, bath rooms with showers that worked and a couple of shops in the Ashram provided personal needs, snacks, clothing, etc. There is a western kitchen that served my kind of food for a very resonable price. Indian food was free and I often had it for lunch (the main meal of the day). During my visit a bank had established a branch office that was open several times per week. They could handle cash advances on credit cards. (I had put a couple of thousand dollars credit on my credit card so in case I needed extra money for an emergency, I could get some dollars quickly and not have to worry about over extending my credit limit, late payment fees and interest). The local town of Vallickavu, just across the backwaters was very interesting to just strole around or pickup personal items not available at the Ashram. The people were teriffic! Everybody. Those at the Ashram, local villagers and people I encountered elsewhere in Kerala. Very friendly and helpful. Met a lot of new friends and had some teriffic conversations. Never encountered any problems either at the Ashram or travelling about Kerla. It is a very different atmosphere from being around Delhi or Mumbai!
