Authorities getting ready for a hassle-free event

KOCHI: As the grand preparations for Amritavarsham 50

are reaching final moments at International Stadium in

Kaloor, authorities are playing their part in ensuring

hassle-free days for Kochiites during this mega event.

The four-day long celebrations had made the public

apprehensive about the supply of water and electricity

to households. Both the Electricity Board and the

Water Authority have made elaborate arrangements to

meet the extra requirement at the venue. And the

officials insist that it will not pose any problem for

the public.

``Though the demand for water and electricity sounds

huge it is not really much compared to the total need

for the city. And even if there is a disruption in the

supply it will be very minor'' says and official of

the Water Authority.

Six additional feeders will supply power to the

stadium while a temporary water connection has been

allotted for the event which will be attended by

around 1.5 lakh people from across the world. On an

average, an individual will get 4 litres of drinking

water every day.

``It will come to only less than 1 percent of the

total requirement of the city. But we will do

everything to prevent a disruption in the supply and

the public need not worry about it'' says Water

Authority officials.

Over 2 lakh to be fed during Amritavarsham

KOCHI: Feeding a congregation of over two lakh people

is an immense exercise in logistics.

The kitchens at the stadium have to cater not just to

the staple Keralite diet of rice, sambar, avial and

papads, but also to the continental palate of Amma's

European and American devotees.

The kitchen crew has devised a system of feeding the

whole lot in just 90 minutes. For this, there will be

200 counters, with 3,226 volunteers lending a helping

hand. Clearly, this isn't a case where too many cooks

could spoil the broth.

City gets a facelift, courtesy Amritavarsham

celebrations

KOCHI: The Amritavarsham celebrations have come as a

blessing to the Ernakulam city, which is getting a

long-neglected and badly-required facelift.

For starters, the international stadium, for years an

edifice of peeling paint and stinking toilets, is

getting a brand new look, thanks to the efforts of

devotees, who have flocked from across the world for

the event. Long after the celebrations are over, the

stadium will remain thankful for its makeover.

Medical exhibition at Amritavarsham 50

KOCHI: Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences and its

associated medical institutions will organise an

international medical exhibition as part of the

Amritavarsham 50 from September 24 at the

International stadium.

It will present various aspects of medical care, from

anatomical structure, basics of modern treatment and

its benefits to prevention of diseases, hygienic

environment, unscientific lifestyle, nutrition, mother

and child care, first-aid and control measures for

epidemics.

More than 45 stalls will be set up for this exhibition

which is headed by Dr M Gopalan, head of the

department of anatomy, Amrita Institute.

Elaborate measures for disposal of wastes during

Amritavarsham celebrations

KOCHI: The aftermath of most mega events in the city

is piles of uncleared garbage littered all over and

all pervasive stench of rot, often causing residents

to wonder whether this is the price to pay for living

in a happening city.

So it is with some trepidation that Kochiites receive

the news that six lakh devotees will throng to the

city for a darshan of Amma, during the forthcoming

Amritavarsham celebrations. But if the organisers of

this mammoth event are to be believed, not one scrap

of food or bag of polythene will litter the city in

the wake of the celebrations. They promise a thorough

clean-up act.

To live up to this challenging commitment, a massive

committee has been formed to do waste disposal. The

organisers believe that reducing waste generation is

the first big step in this direction. Not only have

they selected vegetables which generate the least

waste to feed the congregation, but have also

consciously taken the decision to avoid use of

non-biodegradable material as much as possible. All

meals will be served in steel dishes, and not in the

more convenient but polluting plastic ones.

While the committee has tied up with the Cochin

Corporation to dispose of the garbage from kitchen and

other areas daily, there are also plans afoot for

constructing a pit at a site three kilometres away

from the venue, for composting garbage. An estimated

five tonnes of garbage will be generated at the

stadium venue alone. Further garbage is likely to be

generated at the other mass accommodation sites being

set up in and around Kochi.

While devotees will be repeatedly told not to litter

the sites, the organisers have also made arrangements

for volunteers to pick up scraps. In fact, the garbage

will be segregated into recyclable, food waste and

inert waste like paper, metal and glass. The food

waste will be treated bacterially for conversion to

manure.

A similar system will be in operation to handle the

massive sewage generation. Around 300 temporary

latrines have been constructed at the site, and all

sewage will be microbically treated for conversion

into manure.

In addition, the venue will be sprayed twice a day

with a mosquito repellent solution made from the

extracts of neem, onion and tulasi.
