Are Spiritual People Special?

Q. Amma, do You think spirituality and spiritual people are special?

Amma: No.

Q. Then?

Amma: Spirituality is all about leading a completely normal life in tune

with our Inner Self. So, there is nothing special about it.

Q. Are You saying that only spiritual-minded people are leading normal

lives?

Amma: Did Amma say that?

Q. Not directly, but Your statement implies that, doesn¹t it?

Amma: That is your interpretation of Amma¹s words.

Q. Okay, but what do You think of the majority of people, who live in the

world?

Amma: Not the majority, aren¹t we all living in the world?

Q. Amma, please....

Amma: As long as we live in the world, we all are worldly people. However,

what makes you spiritual is the way you look at life and its experiences

while living in the world. See, my son, everyone thinks that they are

leading a normal life. Whether they are leading a normal life or not is

something that each individual should find out through proper introspection.

We should also know that spirituality is not something unusual or

extraordinary. Spirituality is not to become special, but to become humble.

It is also important to understand that human birth in itself is very

special.

Amma: You don¹t bathe in a river forever; you bathe in it to come out fresh

and clean. Likewise, if you are interested in leading a spiritual life,

consider your life as a householder as a way to exhaust your vasanas

[tendencies]. In other words, remember that you are living a family life not

to become increasingly immersed in it but to exhaust that and other related

vasanas and to become free from the bondage of action. Your aim should be

exhaustion of negative vasanas, not their accumulation.
