Don't mix religion with politics: Mata

Friday January 23 2004 00:00 IST

PONDICHERRY: Mata Amritanandamayi Devi criticised the

trend of mixing religion with politics and pointed out

that people are more important than religion or

politics.

Speaking to devotees at a reception organised by the

Pondicherry government on Wednesday, Mata said, ''I am

very much concerned about the increasing terrorism and

diminishing family values. India needs a Renaissance

to make all religions work together to achieve

progress and development.''

She also underscored the need for cultivating 'dharma'

and moral values as people are bogged down with stress

and the insatiable want to achieve more in life.

''We should all get ready for a battle, a battle where

love is used as a weapon to bring about peace,'' Mata

Amritanandamayi added.

On her maiden visit to Pondicherry, Mata expressed her

desire to build free houses for the poor. The Amritha

Nidhi pension scheme was also introduced, with the

distribution of Rs 110 to 15 persons, who were

selected as initial beneficiaries.

Lt Governor N N Jha said that he was overwhelmed by

the presence of Amma and hoped that her visit would

promote peace, amity and brotherhood among different

sections of people in the Union Territory.

Pondy Assembly Speaker M D R Ramachandran said that

Mata was striving to evolve a society uniting all

castes and religions.

Education Minister K Lakshminarayanan said Mata

Amritanandamayi was an epitome of simplicity and love

and had believed that language and religious

differences could be overcome by love.

Thousands of people converged at Vivekananda Higher

Secondary School, Lawspet, to get her blessings.

O Rajagopal, Union Minister of State for Defence,

Ministers E Valsaraj, A Elumalai, MLAs Krishnamurthy,

M O H F Shajahan and many others received blessings

from the Amma.

Vamanan Nair, president of the Mata Amritanandamayi

Seva Samithi, was also present.
