Guest guest
Namah Shivayah to all, I am wondering if any of you have had any experience with getting married by Amma. I contacted the MA Center about the saree, and they have been VERY VERY SLOW about getting back to me. I inquired about buying a saree, because I am larger-than-normal and would not be able to fit into the petticoats and blouses at the bookstore. I want to know if I should order from elsewhere or what I should do. Anyway, I guess I have to wait for someone to come back from Europe. My biggest question is: how much do these sarees cost? Someone told me that it was $700-1000. Is this true?! If so, WHY is it a MUST to buy one of Amma's DB sarees? That seems like it would discourage people who are genuinely interested in getting married by Amma (including me!). Thanks to all. I ended up shopping for blouses the day of my wedding, after I chose the sari! Are there places in your area that carry your size? If so, that's what I'd suggest doing. If not...usually, saris are available in most of the jewel tones (red, blue, green/teal, purple/ violet, yellow), as well as some other random colors. What you could potentially do is pick a color or two, and get blouses and petticoats to match those. Not ideal, but... =/ Oh, I just thought of something! One of the other NY tour coordinators was married by Amma this summer. I recall she had a beautiful sari that she really wanted to wear, and was going to ask about whether it would be possible for her to wear that, instead of purchasing a Devi Bhava sari. I just emailed her, to ask if it was okayed. I'll let you know! > My biggest question is: how much do these sarees cost? Someone told > me that it was $700-1000. Is this true?! When I was married by Amma four years ago, the saris were maybe $500, at the upper end. I'm not sure if the prices have risen a lot since then? In terms of why it's a must...I was told by the person with whom I spoke from MA Center that it's because Amma said so, and it has something to do with the shakti with which She imbues these saris. This is why, when you email/ask them in advance, they make sure to tell you to budget for this. In terms of why they have to cost so much...I'm not sure that anyone here can provide a definitive answer? Hopefully, you will get a response from MA Center soon, and it'll all work out! I remember when we got married, I was frantically running around trying to find answers to all of my questions, and I just wasn't getting any. It was a big exercise in surrender, but with such a sweet, sweet reward! It was so very, very worth the money that we had to raise to do it. (I hope I get to see your wedding!!!) Guest guest
Dear Erica, If you buy from Indian shop in India you can buy 10 of those sarees. I really wonder and concern, why stall is selling all the stuffs in high price. If it is little bit high we can adjust. but this is too much. Guest guest
Actually, no one from the MA center told me the price or even hinted at it. A third party told me that they range from $700-1000. That's crazy, I think! I understand that they are very special, but still... There's nowhere in my area that carries my size. I'd have to order it from somewhere. Ordering from India is the least expensive option. Ordering from a local shop is still going to be expensive. I may have to nix the idea if I don't get an answer soon. :/ With love, Erica Ammachi, "ammasiswari" <ammasiswari> wrote: >
Guest guest
You know, it can be really difficult to reach the bookstore during and just before tour. Have you tried calling the general MA Center number and explaining your situation? Maybe they could help you find out the answer to your questions more quickly? And I will definitely let you know as soon as I hear back from the person I know who had the same question about using a sari of her own... Good luck! Guest guest
Erica I am not sure about the rules one has to follow in order to get married by Amma - if there are any - but it's definitely a blessing, so here's my 2 cents. If wearing Amma's DB sari is not mandatory, one option would be to order it from a sari shop online (in India or here in the US). Ofcourse, Indian shops are less expensive than the ones here. The good saris usually come with material for stitching the blouse. If you are in a city like Chicago, NJ/NY, Dallas/Houston, San Jose/Bay area etc, you can easily find an Indian tailor who would make a blouse for you with that material - might cost around 25-30$ (just guessing). I am sure you will get long petticoats/skirts to wear under saris from an Indian sari shop to match the color of your sari. On the darshan before your marriage, take these to Amma and get it blessed. Although it might not equal wearing Amma's DB sari, this comes close enough for someone who can't afford to spend a fortune on their marriage. Most of the saris Amma wears on DB are pure silk saris of the Benares silk type (made in the city of Benares) and are expensive. My own wedding sari, 7 years back, came to about $200. If you need further info, please let me know. Good Luck - I hope you can make this dream come true. In Amma, Uma. Guest guest
Okay, I heard back from the person who got married last summer. Apparently, the Devi Bhava sari was "recommended, not necessarily mandatory," and that someone from MA Center inspected her own sari that she had bought to wear, to confirm it would be fine. >From this, it sounds like if you get a good quality wedding sari, everything should be okay. Guest guest
Still, try to confirm with MA Center! I don't want to have accidentally misconveyed anything! But hopefully, it should not be a problem... Guest guest
I have tried to contact the MA Center on SEVERAL occasions. I don't get any answers! So, I'll take my chances. The worst that can happen is I end up with a lovely saree. Thanks again, Erica Ammachi, "ammasiswari" <ammasiswari> wrote: > > Still, try to confirm with MA Center!
