Om namah shivayah!

A long time ago I posted the story of how Amma came to me, but I'd like to sum

it up again for the group because something just happened that brought it all

back....

My dad lived in India with his guru when I was a child. During that time he

happened to see Amma at the house of a family in Madras, I think. It was 1983

and there were only about twenty people there. We he came home, he raised me in

the Sanatana Dharma tradition and I grew up going to a weekly satsang. There was

a tiny photo of a woman in a white sari (Amma) on the altar, that I was

extremely attracted to as a girl. Nobody remembered Her official name, but that

She was called "Mother." All through my youth and teenage years I would look at

that photo and think, "If I ever find out who She is, She is the one." I was not

really attached to my father's guru, but I had no idea how I would ever find

this "Mother."

Years later I found myself praying to the Universe to send me a spiritual guide.

After only a few weeks of intense prayer a friend of mine suggested that I go

see a female saint who was in town. When I entered the hall I saw the woman from

the photo and knew that She was my guru. The man I was with at the time had been

raised in a cult and his words to me were, "Look at how happy these people are!

They're obviously brainwashed." We left without getting a hug, and had broken up

within a few weeks.

The next year I went with a friend who stayed at the program with me all night.

It was Devi Bhava and when I went up for my first darshan, Amma put Her hands

over Her eyes like a small child playing hide and go seek, then peeked out from

Her fingers and said in english, "You found me!" The rest is history....

So today I was going through my family's basement and I came across a box marked

"Dad's India stuff" (he has since relegated God to a box in the basement, but I

think after seeing me he is remembering :) . I started looking through the old

photos of women in colorful saris carrying huge baskets on their heads, giant

temples with beautiful statues and garden scenes, pictures of my father being

swarmed by children (he is six foot three with flaming red hair, the children at

the time were often overwhelmed by the sight), ect. And there was the photo from

the altar, of Amma, that I had gazed at for so many years growing up, as well as

some other photos of Amma in the tiny house where he'd met Her, some really

sweet, rare pictures that I will scan and post to the group when I get back to

LA. So the story comes full circle.... Jai Ma!

Dear Prajna,

What a neat, beautiful story. You were so blessed to grow up "knowing"

Mother. Also wonderful that you found Her pictures.
