To everyone: I don't know who wrote the above, and that is not important. Also, I am disobeying my own suggestion by responding to this, but I just could not let this stand. >From the accounts I have read, some of which have been posted here by people who were at the ashram, even before the flooding hit the ashram, when there was an initial wash of water along the coast of the nearby area, Amma sent devotees to bring the curious people away and to safety. These people were certainly not all direct devotees of Amma. When the floodwaters hit, Amma quit giving darshan, directed the people in the Ashram (about 20,000 reported on Her website) to the upper floors) and waded out into the water to direct efforts to save lives. She gave not thought to Her own safety. She had devotees attach ropes to the ashram so they could sa fely get to people who were trapped in the waters and bring them back to safety. And She did not leave the ashram area until everyone in the area had been taken to safety at Her engineering college. She even made sure that families were kept together as they were taken to safety. "Even now her devotees are feeding all the refugees from the villages near the ashram, as well as attending to their other needs. Again, not all these people are necessarily devotees of Amma. The following is from Amma's website: Under Amma's instructions, relief camps were set up at both the Amrita University School of Engineering and at the new Ayurveda School. More than 3,000 evacuees are being accommodated there. Nine of the area's schools were set up as disaster shelters by the government, and Amma's ashram has been providing those shelters with food and other necessities like clothes and blankets. Six ambulances from the Ashram's AIMS Hospital, with medical teams lead by 10 doctors are making regular rounds as mobile medical units. They are visiting each shelter every two hours, 24 hours a day. Buzzing with activity, the Ashram is preparing food three times a day for 10,000 people, cooking the rice, uppama and curries, with many of the devotees from around the world chopping vegetables, glad to chip in their bit toward the effort. Sacks of uncooked rice are also being delivered for distribution among the needy. Amma’s ashram is also actively involved in relief operations in Cochin (Vaippin), Trivandrum, Chennai and Pondicherry. Amma has instructed all the Ashram branches throughout South India to help in the relief efforts." I regret to have violated my own request not to respond to attacks on Amma, but again, I repeat, I could not let the above stand. Amma does not turn anyone away. She has directed "Amma's Kitchens" to be set up by devotees all over America to feed the hungry. No one is asked for their Amma pass at the door. Amma's only concern is to alleviate suffering in all forms. Jai Ma ~ Linda
Guest guest
Thank You linda for the post. The author of the doubt was Anamika fisher. Just reflect on the name and you will know why. I tried to reason. The post was made on another . The reason is obvious. I explained to him/her/it that Amma is not like other "saints" who wrote to Judges for indulgence for criminals who defalcated money of old and infirm poensioners and paid part of the stolen money to them for their "charity". But she/he/it said:- "Beggars can't be choosers, OK? We will check out the charity before we send money. We want India to break free from the cycle of poverty NOT keep revolving in it endlessly. We also would like our money to go directly to the people most in need and as quickly as possible. If you have a problem with it, that is your problem." normally I myself will not respond to attacks; but when India is called a "begger" thats the last straw. India and its saints are not like many elsewhere. That people must understand. (To the moderator):- If you think the post is inapprtopriate please feel free to reject. I have no problems. But I am hurt at the attitude of many and the attack on Amma despite the fact that i am not devotee(I do not deserve that name). The standard disclaimer applies: the opinions expressed in any particular message are those of the person who posted them and do not necessarily reflect those of the MA Center, the Amritapuri Math, or any other Amma-affiliated organization. If you don't agree with what a list member says, or feel that it causes undue pain to you as a devotee, you have two options: ignore the message (that's why there is a "delete" button you can click on!), or offer a well thought-out rebuttal without resorting to flaming. On the other hand, I am quick to reject spacey New Age postings that are almost incomprehensible to me and have nothing to do with Amma or with Sanatan Dharma/Hinduism/Eastern spirituality in general, forwarded messages about missing or sick children that are almost always hoaxes, commercial messages such as promos for a Sai Baba site, and of course spam - I have booted out a number of buggers who attempted to pump out spam for dating services, lingam-enlargement pills, and kiddie porn. With any charitable donation, there will always be the question of how much money will actually go to help the affected people, and how much will be spent for administrative costs. Certainly you have every right to be concerned that donations to Amma's relief fund will be used to repair the damage to the ashram property, rather than to help the now-homeless people of the nearby villages, who may or may not be Amma devotees. But most of the clean-up of the ashram grounds is being done pro bono by sevites, so the amount of funds going there will be minimal. One good thing about this tsunami disaster - it's all but stopped discussion of the Kanchi Shankaracharya's arrest!! I presume the jail where he's being held withstood the tsunami!
