Briefing the newsmen after a cabinet meeting here, Chandy said 50 per cent of total number of houses to be constructed afresh had been allotted to the Math while the rest were given to other non-governmental organisations. The rehabilitation works were right on course and temporary shelters for all the displaced would be constructed by February 24. As many as 300 shelters would be erected at Alappad alone. Three Ministers had been specially assigned to three worst-hit areas of Alappad panchayat in Kollam, Arattupuzha in Alappuzha and Edavanakkad in Ernakulam, he said. Labour Minister Babu Divakaran would supervise the rehabilitation works at Alappad while Tourism Minister K C Venugopal and Fisheries Minister Dominic Presentation were given charges of Arattupuzha and Ernakulam respectively. The Chief Minister also said sea walls would be constructed where ever it was necessary at Alappad and Arattupuzha panchayats. As part of another scheme, the Government was also disbursing money to those who wanted to construct homes by themselves.
