Guest guest
Dear List Members, does anyone know of details or stories about Amma´s hair, like how often She washes it, and what kind of shampoo She uses ? Amma´s hair is long and parted down the middle. Swamini also parts her long hair down the middle, as does Brcii. Dipamrita . Is there a reason for all of them parting their hair down the middle, and having long hair ? Is there any advice Amma gives to the Swamis about their hair style or length of their hair ? A couple of Swamis always keep their heads covered...does anyone know the reason for that ? My far out (whimsical) thinking is that maybe if I started parting my hair down the middle then it might help me spiritually....maybe my cakras would get some more positive energy, or be more open to a better energy flow, or something like that ( especially during my IAM meditation). Thanks for letting me indulge in a trivial question. In Amma's Love, sarama
Guest guest
Dear Sara, Thank you for your "trivial" post. I'm looking forward to seeing if anyone has the answers. I have only one answer to a question you asked. When I was new to Amma I asked a renunciant why "that swami" (Poornamrita) always kept his head covered. I was told keeping the head covered was a sign of respect. Guest guest
Some of these things that you notice are custom, and that too conservative cultral custom. Examples include parting hair in the middle and covering the head. Amma also covers her head except that the cloth falls off almost immediately. Regarding he center part, I'm sure that there are old sayings that somebody knows indicating either the beauty or appropriateness of this style. The same is likely true for long hair. It's interesting that Native American males traditionally do not cut their hair, nor do Sikhs. The Sikh turban is a device for making sure the uncut hair is not a disadvantage in battle. About covering the head, I was told that it is a sign of respect but I discovered other things through my experiences. At one time I had very powerful experiences. At the time I was very grateful that I had had Vedanta study before these experiences or I could have been very frightened by them. Blessedly, a close friend, who had also learned Vedanta, was also having similar experiences and we were able to help each other. We would lose identificaiton with the body and become the whole scene that our senses were taking in. This was most troublesome when driving a car. One moment I would be driving normally and suddenly I would become the road and the other cars and the distant hills. Very disorienting. It took a tremendous effort to focus enough to stop at red lights and stop signs. "You are also the driver in that body in that car and you must stop the car or you will hurt someone." I'd say to myself. It was pretty awkward at work also. I'd be working away and suddenly I'd become the building and all the workers in it as well as the scene where it was. Little did I care about deadlines or telephones ringing. I was responsible for submitting everyone's time records so that they would get paid so a similar struggle to focus would be made in order not to cause harm to others.. My friend and I discovered that covering the head and neck -- at the least the back of the neck-- made it much easier to remain functional during these "flights." As soon as we saw this, we thought of how many spiritual groups require their leaders to cover the head. Monks used to cover their heads in Christianity. Jewish men wear yamulkes as to Catholic monsignors, bishops and the pope. The Eastern Orthodox priest covers his head. You can think of more I'm sure. The driving challenge reminded me of how the Shankaracharyas are not permitted to drive. Perhaps it is assumed that they too will merge from time to time with everything and are best NOT behind the wheel. For what it's worth (Buffalo Springfield, 1967) I have long hair, parted in the center, tied back in a pony tail. I still have most of it, which is beating the odds given my age and family history (my dad started going bald in his 20s). Keval
Guest guest
Regarding Amma's reason for keeping Her hair long, I don't know that. But, I've read that in some types of yoga practices, power is retained in the hair. Hence, it's been speculated that this is why in the Old Testament story, Samuel lost his strength when his hair was cut. .....maybe my cakras would get some more positive energy, or be more open to a better energy flow, or something like that Search presents - Jib Jab's 'Second Term'
