This should settle the question of Amma's omniscience:

http://archives.moneyplans.net/frontend206-verify-6314.html

"'If somebody does something wrong or unethical it is indeed bad. However, I

don't know whether they have done something wrong or not, neither do I want

to comment on it. There is one thing for sure, that those people who speak

the truth are helped and blessed by god,' Mata Amritanandamayi said in

Nagore on Sunday while she was distributing relief to tsunami victims."

I'm not posting this to disillusion anyone. I happen to believe that

spiritual maturity is characterized by the ability to love and accept

situations and people as they are, rather than by a need to fabricate and

cling to fanciful notions. Amma, just as she is - not totally omniscient but

totally awesome - is fully worthy of our love.

Well that hardly settles the question of Amma's omniscience. In the

past Amma is known to have made statements such as

- "I am just an ordinary person..."

- "I have no powers..."

- "I am very ignorant, after all I have only studied till 4th

standard.."

Now if I were to combine all of those statements, I can conclude that

Amma is a very ignorant ordinary person and most certainly lacks any

siddhies; and that it is for nothing but passing time that millions

of people around the world are eager to receive Her darshan hugs -

Now we all know that this is nonsense.

Nothing can be concluded about Amma's statement about the kanchi

acharya. In fact one could interpret that to mean that the kanchi

acharya will receive help in the future from some quarter("that those

people who speak the truth are helped and blessed by god ").

Also just because Amma pretends to show her non-omniscience most of

the time does not mean that she is not aware of everything. Such

demonstrations have been given to select devotees, that more than

confirm that Amma is very much omniscient. For the rest(which

certainly includes me), they are not mature enough or their soul

evolution has not ripened enough to warrant such experiences.

Rest assured that none of are disillusioned with your post. I am sure

that each one of us has certain opinions regarding Amma and

thankfully they remain opinions only.

Best regards,

-yogaman

ps. I do know at least one person has experienced Amma's omniscience.

Unfortunately I am not at liberty to discuss this in detail since the

person in question requested me not to share it with anyone else.

A friend saw my post and sent the following:

"I more or less agree with you that it shouldn't matter whether Amma is

omniscient or not. Especially since none of us really knows what the word

omniscience means. So, it also shouldn't matter if some people are of the

opinion that She is and others that She is not. It obviously means different

things to different people.

Let me relate a story but keep in mind it's not to convince you one way or

the other. I myself do not really know. You remember Prof. M. W. ( genius

mathematician )? Well, few years ago I ran into him at the R.I. retreat. He

decided to have his mantra ( given to him by MMY ) checked by Amma. Before

he could give the note to the Swami, Amma pulled him over and told him his

mantra very clearly. I saw him minutes after this and he said Amma gave him

an experience of omniscience. Another story I read in matruvani was exactly

the same with a Hebrew Scholar who had Amma bless his long Hebrew mantra

(prayer) by telling him in very clear Hebrew before he had a chance to give

his note to a swami. Does this prove omniscience? I really do not know since

I do have no experience of omniscience myself and do not know exactly what

the word means."

-------------

I have no problem with this sort of omniscience. I realize Amma has

extraordinary abilities of this sort. I just very much doubt that if I'm

walking down the street in Iowa and a fly lands on my nose, she will be

aware of it. In other words, she's capable of knowing all sorts of things,

but not all things in the Universe at once. So she has a degree of

omniscience if you want to call it that, but a human nervous system has it's

limitations.

I may ask her about this during one of the retreats this summer.

Rick:

I am no authority on this subject of omniscience, but I dont see why

one cannot be omniscient in a human body itself. I provide a citation

from the Autobiography of a Yogi, where when Sri Yukteswar gave the

very first experience of Samadhi to Yogananda, his breath stopped and

he was concurrently aware of EVERY SINGLE THING that happened around

him for several miles (men walking, birds flying...). I think you

will agree that this is omniscience; and Yogananda was very much in a

human body. Now Yogananda was in his early stages of Samadhi-hood,

and so it stands to reason that for someone like Amma, for whom

samadhi is second nature, would be omniscient (despite not giving

demonstrations of it).

The possibility of omniscience in a human body is also affirmed by

Patanjali in the Yogasutra.

As I write this, Amma is probably inwardly chiding me for arguing

with her dear devotees such as you :-). As you said, regardless of

whether Amma is omniscient or not, there is no abatement of her

magnificence, love and supreme beauty.

Best regards,

-yogaman
