Noise may be unreal, but sound is not. I have read may accounts of people who, when sitting with Amma at the edge of the ocean waters in Kerala, hear a gentle "OM" emerging from the waters. I have also read recently, though, I am sorry I don't remember where, that when doing the Ma Om meditation, at some point, all disappears into a kind of Hum sound. If we go beyond the phenomenal universe, perhaps there is no sound, but I hope not. And of course, I realize the difference between sound and noise. Mantras are sacred sounds. We sing bhajans to bring us closer to God/dess. Here is a brief passage from "The Tantric Way," by Ajit Mookerjee and Madhu Khanna: "The Shri Yantra is a symbolic pattern of Shakti's own form...the form of the universe, symbolizing the various Shakti's descent in manifestation...Like creation itself, the Shri Yantra came into being through the force of primordial desire. The impulse of desire, born of the inherent nature of Prakriti, creates a throb which vibrates as sound (nada). This manifestation is represented by a point, or bindu. In the first state of manifestation, the bindu is called Para Bindu, which is the nucleus of the condensed energy, the seed of the ultimate Sound, and the dynamic and static aspects of the two (Shiva-Shakti) in one..." Amma is both ultimate Silence and glorious Sound, in the humble opinion of this devotee. Pranams, Linda
