The event has set aside over one hundred seats for Bay Area based survivors with a dual purpose of raising funds for Hurricane Katrina survivor Support Services nationwide and giving the survivors a party. The event occurs on Sunday, November 6, 2005 from 4-7 pm at the Mill Valley Community Center at 180 Camino Alto, Mill Valley, California. For directions see http://www.millvalleycenter.org/Directions.htmOn July 24, 2005, the United Nations announced the distinguished award of Special UN consultative status to Mata Amritanandamayi Math (M.A. Math), a leader in tsunami relief efforts and humanitarian activities in India. M.A. Center has pledged one million dollars targeted to Hurricane Relief. The event benefits victims of Hurricane Katrina by donating all proceeds toward M.A. Center’s U.S. survivor relief effort. Music is provided by “Woodstock” legend Country Joe McDonald and a seasoned cast of performing artists. Mr. McDonald was leader and lead singer of the 1960’s rock and roll group, “Country Joe and the Fish”. Despite being an honorably discharged military veteran, Mr. McDonald is best-known for the rousingly satirical song "I Feel Like I'm Fixin' to Die Rag" concerning the Vietnam War with the unforgettable chorus ("One, two, three, what are we fighting for?") . The anthem is well known to the Woodstock generation of the 1960’s and 1970’s. He is also known for "The Fish Cheer" which was a cheerleader style call-and-response with the audience ("Give me an F!") documented in the classic documentary “Woodstock”. Country Joe has recorded over 33 albums and has written hundreds of songs over a career spanning 40 years. In 2004 Country Joe played at the World Peace Music Awards. In recent years Country Joe has become a respected scholar on the subject of the life of the worlds most famous military nurse, Florence Nightingale. His "Tribute to Florence Nightingale" website has become a resource for students of the great military heroine. Joining Country Joe on the marquee we mark the appearance of the FREDDIE HUGHES BAND featuring Rich Kirch. Oakland’s Freddie Hughes is a respected Bay Area soul/blues singer. Mr. Hughes greatest hit was 1967’s soul drenched, "Send My Baby Back," Freddie’s vocal style is reminiscent of Curtis Mayfield. Mr. Hughes voice contains the heart grabbing tonality of gospel laced with a soul stirring falsetto. The band features blues guitarist, Rich Kirch. Mr. Kirch played with blues legend John Lee Hooker for over 11 years. Rich performed Mr. Hooker’s 1995 Grammy Award winner, "Chill Out". The lineup will also feature Marin County performing artist Lakshmi Devi . Ms. Devi displays a passionate vocal style intertwined with intricate rhythms and spirited lyrics creating a high-energy blend of tribal rock, exotic dance rhythms imbued with a pop sensibility. Ms. Devi is a songwriter/lyricist mixing kirtan and Indian percussion laced with devotion to the Divine Feminine. The concert next features Northern California radio station KPFA’s weekly World Music host Stephen Kent. The Didjeridu is described as a wind instrument primarily played by the Aborigines of Australia. Critic J. Poet of “Tower Pulse” Magazine described Mr. Kent as “the finest non-aboriginal didgeridoo player”. Performing as a duo Mr. Kent is joined by the distinguished Geoffrey Gordon. Mr. Gordon is a multi-instrumentalist, composer, performer, recording artist, teacher, and world music producer. He has been featured on many popular motion picture soundtracks such as (Raising Arizona; Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Airheads). Mr. Gordon is a drummer, percussionist, and tabla player. Geoffrey has recorded and performed for over three decades with artists ranging from rock and roll legends Robbie Robertson and Rita Coolidge, to Broadway performances of M. Butterfly with John Lithgow and has performed in the “Lion King” on Broadway. Mr. Gordon has also performed with Jai Uttal and Krishna Das. Geoffrey was Composer in Residence and taught Music for Dance at Sarah Lawrence College 1985-1990. M. A. Center founder Sri Mata Amritandamayi (Ammachi) will offer public programs on November 17 through November 19, 2005 at M.A. Center of Castro Valley, California Music Unlimited - Access over 1 million songs.
