Dear Jyotsna and All ~ I distinctly remember a post to this digest by a person (I can't remember who) who reported Amma having made a statement, during Her winter tour, about "dark clouds" on December 26. I think we need to be careful to go too far in either direction. Whether Amma said this or not, there have certainly been enough significant calamities during 2005, to warrant Amma's request that we pray, do sadhana, etc. Perhaps there were calamities that didn't happen just because enough people prayed, peformed puja, etc. We have no way to know, one way or the other, when Amma has asked us to perform more spiritual work, how much what we did helped or didn't help. When I was doing my Tarot workshops many years ago, a significant number of people came expecting and wanting me to tell their future. After having studied the Tarot for a number of years, I had come to the conclusion that the real purpose of these cards was not for prediction but was a kind of spiritual path, using imagery to guide the person. I always had a brief introduction (the workshops were highly experiential) where I said, "I am not here to tell fortunes." (groans from the attendees) Then I would go into a brief description of the elements of the Tarot and my belief that it functioned in a variety of ways: to provide guideposts to help our journeys, to be a mirror for self-reflection, to indicate where we might be out of balance and where we might need to focus (for example, a "spread" might show a need to be more loving towards oneself or a need to put one's willpower to greater use), etc. Then I would give everyone a deck of cards, and they would do their own "reading." My goal was to empower people to work directly with the images and not rely on outside sources such as a "reader" or a book. The results were always astonishing, not only to my students, but to me as well. Even with the briefest discussion, people were able to very accurately see for themselves what was in front of their faces, and their amazement was often due to the very direct relationship they found between their "reading" and what was going on in their own lives. Sometimes, predictive elements did show up. I did not reinforce them, nor did I negate them. My attitude was one of "wait and see" and to compare that "prediction" with other elements the person saw in the cards. I had many people write to me or tell me later that the "predictions" came true. Perhaps the ones whose "predictions" didn't come true didn't bother to tell me. But they were not "mypredictions." They were simply what was there to be seen, which, as I always cued the participants, did not mean they were set in stone. I believe Amma speaks the truth that She sees, and She has a more comprehensive view of Everything than any of us. Would I be disappointed if a positive and personal "prediction" didn't come true? I don't know. Maybe, maybe not. In either case I would not hold Amma responsible, for it would be my own actions in conjunction with other forces that would lean the outcome one way or another.
