Guest guest
Om Namah Shivaya, I am wondering if anyone has any advice regarding how I may create a more spiritual, uplifting environment for my brother who is in the hospital being treated for Leukemia. Everyone in our family except myself are completely non-religious, and are unable to maintain a positive outlook on his condition - thus, the energy around him is very "heavy". Right now, the people taking care of him are feeling very pessimistic and sorrowful, and this is affecting his consciousness to such an extent that he is suffering from depression and will not talk (of course, much of this is also related to the chemotherapy and the shock of learning that he has a terminal illness). Because no one in my family has a spiritual outlook on life, and no faith to hold onto during this time, the negativity surrounding my brother is very intense. I am seeking advice on how I may be able to uplift my brother's spirit and create a more auspicious environment for him. I was thinking about bringing him meditative music to relax and soothe him (such as Enya). Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I have never spoken to him about Amma, and am not sure he would be receptive. Thus, I would also welcome ideas on how to introduce someone who is agnostic/atheistic and wary of organized religion to Amma. Guest guest
Namah Shivaya Nischala, I am so sorry that your brother is so sick and you all have to go through this. There is an old saying "there are no atheists in the foxholes". So maybe during this sad time your brother and members of the family may be more receptive to a little bit of spirituality. I think the meditative music is a very good idea. Maybe other list members have some good ideas. I will keep you and your family in my prayers. Jai Ma! Guest guest
Maybe you should buy some of those "near death experience" books, written by Betty Eadie (http://tinyurl.com/mjv5j), Dannion Brinkley (http://tinyurl.com/m4el3), Raymond Moody (http://tinyurl.com/lj6rn) and others. Sit in the hospital room reading one and leave the others lying around. Maybe family members will pick them up and start reading them, or ask you about what you're reading. > > Nischala wrote: >> Om Namah Shivaya, >> >> I am wondering if anyone has any advice regarding how I may create a >> more spiritual, uplifting environment for my brother who is in the >> hospital being treated for Leukemia. Guest guest
Play AMMA's Bhajans in his room. Also you can buy the chants CD from the MA Center and play it all the time. You can also play Lalitha Sahasranama Archana 1000 names of the Divine Mother. Music is divine and Archana has healing qualities. Guest guest
How about reading to him some spiritual books, like Eckhart Tolle's "A New Earth" or "Still Here," Ram Das's book on aging and death. "Amma and Me" by Manoharan, is a really uplifting and very funny account of a long-time devotee of Amma and his experiences with Her, and I think is a lovely introduction to Amma. You could also watch uplifting movies together, have good music playing (the Beatles usually put everyone in a good space, and it's not as "out there" as Amma singing and laughing hysterically!), and invite everyone to share a delicious and lovingly prepared meal in his room together. The Tao Te Ching is a fantastic little scripture that hardly offends anyone's non-spiritual inlcinations, and is brimming with wonderful, life-affirming wisdom. Best of all, you can read it to him in about 20 minutes. Above all, I recommend lots of affectionate care and attention. Hug, hold hands, laugh and remember the good stuff. You don't have to necessarilly tell him or anyone in the family about Amma or God or anything, but your warmth and en-joyment will lift everybody. And pray, pray, pray!!! I will pray for you and your family, too. love, Prajna Devi's Daughter <devi.daughter wrote: put a green plant by his bedside. Guest guest
I can't underscore this enough. I'm in training as a psychologist and although none of my patients know about Amma, my spiritual path infuses my work, nonetheless. When patients suddenly feel deeply moved and start weeping and feeling better and don't know what's come over them....I know what's (or WHO'S) come over them. ;-) Trust that Amma will work through you to whatever capacity is needed and can be absorbed. Guest guest
Don't forget the Silence. The goal of all spiritual practices is to slow down the mind and make it more alert so that Silence, Stillness and Peace become noticeable. Once Silence is noticeable, we can consciously choose to enter it more deeply. One may notice that Silence is the Source from where all love, goodness, peace, compassion and healing flow. Unusual circumstances also can open us up to Silence, but people unused to it become nervous, etc and want to replace it with something ~ not knowing that Silence is God. By all means take advantage of all the other very good suggestions( spiritual music, songs, books, videos, hugs, etc ~ "Colors of the Heart" CD by Amrit Chatterjee was written specifically as "Healing Music" no words and I like it a lot ). All these will help Silence to be noticed. And when the Silence comes don't run away from it; it is God's Presence and perhaps in this case your only hope; focus on your heart and pray. While he is sleeping it is good to stay and pray and perhaps do the following little exercise in Silence ~ or read the spiritual books : Some emotion comes( let's say Grief ) Acknowledge and feel the Grief Seek the Silence Acknowledge and feel the Silence Allow the Silence and the Grief to meet and touch each other Notice that Grief has become grief And that Silence remains Silence Three other CD's ( first listen and see if it will be appropriate in your view ) : "Hara Hara" on Wings of Song by Robert Gass (very powerful heart opener) "Om Namah Sivaya" same CD as above( heard good results in similar case ) "Shelter for Your Heart" by Jaya (open wide your heart, etc ) Also, "Om Hrim Namah Sivaya" by Karunamayi ( Hrim helps to open the heart ) Best of Luck with Amma's Blessings, amarnath/anatol PS ~ if heart opens and tears come, let them !
