The word "Gayatri" is in fact a technical term that is used for a particular meter of Vedic poetry. This meter is only used in the Veda and most of the Vedic Mantras are in Gayatri Chanda, as is also the famous Gayatri Mantra. It is called "Gayatri Mantra" because it is constructed in Gayatri Chanda (having three paadas, not four paadas like in an Anushtup Chanda)... Dear Mahamuni ~ I am glad to read what you have written. I must have missed a digest because when I came to this one I found a lively discussion about free will vs no free will and, from what you have written, it sounds like someone must have been questioning whether or not the Gayatri Mantra is a mantra or not. Everytime I have seen or heard about the Gayatri Mantra it has been presented as a mantra, so I'm not sure where the idea that it isn't would have come from. One thing that I discovered recently, though, is that there is more than one Gayatri Mantra, so I think your mention of Saavitri, the deity who is glorified in the Gayatri Mantra was good information to provide. I have been reading/reciting the "Cosmic Puja," which is described as a meditation and worship of all forms of divinity in the existence. Within this scripture, there is a short puja to Ganesha. After a brief honorific verse, there comes the: ganesha gayatri om tat purushaya vidmahe vakratundaya dhimahi tanno danti prachodayat Om we meditate on the Perfect Consciousness, we contemplate the One with abroken tooth. May that One with the Great Tusk grant us increase. I love this ganesha gayatri, and I suspect that there are others as well.
