Arathi - Waving of the Flame

The Chairperson of Prashanthi Council (Dr.Michael Goldstein) has

forwarded a memorandum regarding the waving of the Arathi flame at

Sai Devotional meetings.

The memorandum reads as follows: -

"At the last Guru Poornima, Swami advised that Arathi in Overseas

Sai Centers be performed with incense sticks instead of the flame. I

informed all of you of Swami's Pronouncement and it is recorded in

the minutes of our Guru Poornima Meetings.

Subsequently, several devotees contacted me and requested that we

place before Swami the prayers of the devotees in your respective

regions that Swami permit Arathi with the flame be continued. I did

place this before Swami. Swami, in His infinite Compassion, has

instructed that those devotees who feel that Arathi with the flame

is an essential part of their devotional experience be permitted to

continue.

Please do not construe this as Swami's emphasis on rituals, or that

devotees not currently performing Arathi with the flame should begin

doing so. Furthermore, since Swami had discouraged the use of the

flame in Arathi, all of you who elect to continue this practice

should exercise great caution in the use of the flame."
