Akhanda Bhajan is a continuous singing of devotional songs, starting

at 6.00pm on the Saturday and ending at 6.00pm on the Sunday, on the

second Saturday-Sunday in November (this year the global Akhanda

Bhajan will be on 8th and 9th November). The first Akhanda Bhajan

was in 1976, and it has been performed each year ever since as a

special "Birthday present" to Swami.

The word "Akhanda" means continuous, without a break, but Baba asks

us to put this into perspective. "What is a period of 24 hours", He

says, "when we consider the vastness of the universe and the

eternity of time? It is just a wink, a tiny part of man on earth".

He says that to truly deserve the name "Ahkanda", our hearts should

sing with devotion at all times - "It should become as continuous as

breathing itself."

Akhanda Bhajan helps raise the general level of consciousness

everywhere. Baba tells us that, "Man today is forced to breathe the

air polluted by sounds that denote violence, hatred, cruelty and

wickedness. Singing with devotion can cleanse the atmosphere and

render it pure, calm and ennobling. It was with this high purpose in

view that this programme of global Akhanda Bhajan was designed."

It envelopes our planet in healing vibrations. It is performed by

Sai Centres all over the world. For about four hours out of the

total 24, it would be taking place simultaneously nearly everywhere

in the world, except for some Pacific Islands - Samoa is the last to

join itself to the encircling garland of song, while New Zealand and

Fiji share the honour of being the first.

Baba says that, "This programme of Bhajan done continuously for 24

hours all around the world in all lands, spreads the message of Love

through the Names of the Embodiment of Love. It saturates the

atmosphere with thoughts of God and peace and joy that He showers.

It does not just affect one particular area and its environment, but

transmutes the entire atmosphere. Let melody and harmony surge up

from your hearts and let all take delight in the love that you

express through song."

Baba explains that, "the entire atmosphere is surcharged with

electro-magnetic waves. Because of the pollution of these waves, the

hearts of human beings also become polluted. To purify this

atmosphere, you have to chant the Lord's Name and sanctify the radio

waves. There is pollution in the air we breathe, the water we drink

and the food we consume. All this has to be purified by suffusing

the atmosphere with the Divine Name. Chant the Name with joy in your

hearts."

" In this age of kali, Namasankirtan is the easiest way to reach

God."

-Baba

The vibrations of the sacred sounds which arise from the Nama

Sankirtan have a mystic energy that draws the omnipresent Divine to

the devotees whose heart strings vocalise it. The name has the power

to redress, cure and save. Chanting the glory of God is the royal

path to self realisation. When all the devotees sing the Bhajans in

one voice, the Divine Vibrations pervade all through in the

surroundings and electrify them. On the second Saturday-Sunday in

November, Bajans are conducted for 24 hours on a Global level at all

Sathya Sai Centres, for conferring peace, harmony and bliss to all

of mankind.
