Baba blessing the gathering on the occasion of his 78th birthday celebrations.

PUTTAPARTHI: Sri Sathya Sai Baba on Sunday advised people to lead a righteous

and meaningful life and not to give up their faith in God.Addressing a huge

gathering on the occasion of his 78th birthday celebrations here at Prashanthi

Nilayam, Baba said human life depends on the four qualities of truth,

righteousness, peace and love.``Whatever education you have and position you

hold in society, if you do not have truthfulness, righteousness, peace, and

love in your daily life it's all a waste. Without these qualities human life

will collapse,'' he said.Emphasising the importance of guidance by parents for

children to make them better citizens, Baba said Putali Bai never hesitated to

punish Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi for his mistakes.``Queen Kausalya had played

a very important role in moulding Lord Rama's life. If there was no Kausalya,

then there would have been no Rama.

Sita infused courage and valour in her children Lava and Kush."``Like that,

without my mother Eswaramma's contribution I wouldn't have been able to stand

amidst all of you. All of you praise me but forget my mother's hardships and

contribution in moulding my life when I was a child,'' he said.``A child's

lifestyle depends on the quality life of his parents. All our ancestors used to

perform pujas for God's benevolence. My mother, along with her neighbour Karanam

Subbamma, used to perform Satyanarayana puja. It was Subbamma who advised my

mother to give me the name `Satyanarayana','' Baba said.Recalling his

childhood, he remembered how his brother and relatives had misgivings about his

behaviour. ``They thought that an evil spirit had possessed me. When they

realised my power, people started bringing sick people to me for treatment.

While some people attempted to poison me, a few others set my thatched hut on

fire, but nothing happened to me,'' he

said.Baba said he was born at 3 a.m. and that his behaviour puzzled

obstetricians. ``I was laughing instead of crying when I was born which was

unusual,'' he said.Assuring that no devotee would suffer if he enters

Prashanthi Nilayam, Baba said, ``I will protect my devotees and do the needful

whenever they are in trouble.''Earlier, addressing the gathering, former Chief

Justice of the Supreme Court, Justice P.N. Bhagawati, described Baba as Rama,

Krishna and Jesus.``There is no greater teacher on this earth than Bhagawan Sri

Sathya Sai Baba, who was the main force behind the transformation of human

beings,'' he said.Karnataka Chief Minister S.M. Krishna also attended the

function along with his wife, daughter and grand-children. Union Minister of

State for Home I.D. Swamy and well-known playback singer of yesteryears P.

Susheela were present among the prominent personalities.Baba, who came on a

electric car followed by a singing troupe,

blessed the gathering.
