Culture is the distillate of human experience and the traditions are an adaptation to that experience. The Tilak is adorned in between the eye brows and just above the bridge of the nose,; this is considered as the spiritual centre that makes the man wise and is where the AAJNA chakra is. Saints millions of years ago went within, searched and discovered this as the centre for judgment and discrimination. I would like to give a scientific explanation for this. To acknowledge that centre, Hindu tradition is to ware the Tilak , boht Men and Women. Now the PET scan studies done on the jail mates who had committed crimes like murders, this area of teh brain does not show any activity. On the contrary, Dr. H. Benson did pet scan studies on the subjects who were doing mantra and regulated breathing exercise and found that this centre lights up. This is called the ORBITO_ FRONTAL area of teh frontal lobe that has CINGULATE Gyrus, which is very important for human Responses and not Reactions. As long as we reflect on our opinions, thoughts, and respond, we are using this portion of the brain. Angry people do not use this portion, but use mor ethe brain stem or teh animal brain. That is why Swami is emphasizing on Humans to live as Human. The second point is tradition. It is red and every married woman has to wear teh red Tilak. This corresponds to Prosperity and also the color of teh menstrual flow. Widows do not wear Tilak. THis meant for people seeing one with the powdered Sindoor or Tilak, the woman i smarried and is capable of having children. They did not wear this on the days that they were in their monthly inconveniences. THIS IS TRADITION. Most important thing is the integration of modern scinece taht is embracing and teaching spirituality is very scientific. If it is Naamam or Tilak that is seen on the Gods forehead , either as a vision or a dream that has a different significance. Swami Swahaananda of Ramakrishna mission ha dwritten a nice book on Hindu symbology. Swami's discourses time and again had reiterated what the naamam signifies. The THREE horizontal lines adorned by the saivites is a representation of , 3 gunas: tamasic, rajasisc and Saatwic 3 Times: Past, Present and Future 3 Aspects of the Deha or Body: The Gross, Subtle and Causal body It is HE who is Beyond all these attributes. The difference for Vaishnava Sampradaayam is to adorn the THREE lines in a Vertical fashion. Symbology is the same. Lord Vishnu, Krishna, Srinivasa adorn in a vertical fashion. I hope my previous in GENERAL reply and thius SPECIFIC to GODS clarifies some doubts for you.
