Sai Ram. I have a query from a lady, new to Swami,

who asks what Swami may have said on the subject of

'suicide'. She is in distress as her son took his life

a couple of years ago. I have failed to find anything

He may have said on the subject.

Your assistance would be appreciated.

Patrick.

RE: [saibabanews] A query

thought i might share what i heard on the subject though it was not

from Baba....i heard that when a person does that it creates a

samskara and will be inclined to repeat the same action again in

future births...also from another sorce when a person does that they

think they are ending something pain or whatever but they just find

themselves alive after the death of the body becuase their body only

dies so they just wake up on the other side and have no way to get

back into their body and have to suffer and feel the pain they have

caused their loved ones...it does not solve any thing like they

thought it would because we dont die only the body does...they

still have the issues to resolve. in other words its not a way out!

im sorry for your friend....i live by a railroad track and a lady of

about fifty lay down on the tracks .she was killed. i could feel

something like dark heavy depressed energy from far away..people are

not in their right mind when this happens. hope this is a little

help...give them plenty of positive prayers and forgivness

Sai Ram!

Swami speaks clearly on the subject of suicide in the

book

"Sri Sathya Sai Anandadayi - Journey with Sai"

By Karunamba Ramamurthy. A series of of question and

answer sessions with our beloved Lord. In this excerpt

He specifically addresses the subject of suicide:

"DEVOTEE: Swami, when I am distressed, I feel like

committing suicide.

SWAMI: You should not. However difficult life is, try

to be its master and not its slave. Every human being

has a preordained life span. It is like staying in a

leased house. Before you actually vacate the house,

you have to find another one to move in. Similarly,

before leaving one body, God selects another body and

a span, depending upon the karmic debts. In case death

is inflicted arbitrarily, you are denying yourself a

chance to work out your karma as early as possible and

reach a permanent abode. In suicide, you are stranded

midway. It would be a frightening state of affairs for

you. There is no vacant space in nature. God has

filled the space with spirits and many other invisible

entities. When suicide is committed, they show up and

terrorise you. Moreover, a jivi is blissfully aware of

God only for one hour in its life. First, fifteen

minutes while shedding the mortal coil, i.e., at

death; second, fifteen minutes after coming out of the

womb, i.e., at birth; and third, thirty minutes during

the marriage. God is present with the jivi on all

these three occasions.

Hence, do not destroy the life that God has given you.

Lead the life you have got righteously. The person who

faces the trials in life calmly and always remembers

God will one day, definitely, get His grace. Do not

doubt its veracity. Face these tests with faith in

Him.

(Swami asked other people to get their doubts

clarified. Nobody asked anything.)

SWAMI: You will never get such wonderful days again.

Ask any doubt you have got and I will clear it."

Lots of prema

Om Sai Ram!

Following are quotes of Sathya Sai Baba regarding SUICIDE, which

were taken from the 2nd Edition of A COMPENDIUM OF THE TEACHINGS OF

SATHYA SAI BABA that is in the process of being published.

"Some people think that suicide is the only way of putting an end to

all their troubles. They think, `It is the mind that is responsible

for our suffering. Let us put an end to it.' It is the worst of

sins. The mind cannot be killed so easily. One should never

entertain such low ideas. One should be prepared to face any

difficulties with fortitude and strive hard to sanctify one's life."

Discourse July 24, 2002

"The United States of America has a great name as being the land of

Kubera (the embodiment of wealth). The people don't fall short of

food, and there are no obstacles to pleasure. In spite of this, the

number of deaths is more than in any other country. These are not

ordinary deaths, they are unfavorable deaths. What is the reason for

this? Is it that they have no food, medicines or cures for diseases?

No! In Europe there is freedom. In Sweden, the government helps to

provide all conveniences and comforts. There is no dearth of

conveniences in the individual's life. Yet, the rate of suicide in

Sweden is the highest of all countries. Not only that, but the

number of divorces is also the highest. What is the reason behind

that? It all depends upon the food that causes mental agitation."

SSN Spring 1995 P 15

"When you get, in spite of best efforts, ugly harmful ideas of

hatred or anger, or animalism, you must infer that they are due to

faults in food habits, or in the company you keep, either with

friends or books or films or other forms of entertainment. Keep away

from such and pray to God, your Guardian to save you from the fall

towards which you are heading. Ideas of suicide, let Me tell you,

are born out of the most despicable form of cowardice. Do not allow

them to affect you; be bold, so bold that you are determined to

brave out any calamity that you may assail. When you have God

installed in your heart, who can lead you to destruction?" SSS VOL

VIIB Chap 4 P 27

"Do not attach too much value to victory or too much importance to

defeat. Even in examinations when you fail, do not be overcome by

despair and do silly things like attempting to take your own life.

Life is much more precious than that. You are born for much greater

things than the passing of examinations. Be brave and patient. All

is not lost if you do not pass an examination which tests just one

aspect of your intelligence! Your destiny does not depend upon

examination marks; it depends more on character, will-power and the

Grace of God." SSS VOL I Chap 24 P 152

"The suicide rate abroad is very high. The reason is no peace of

mind. Peace of mind is only in Bharath. Peace is only in God. So

develop virtues. Once you develop virtues, money follows. The

Goddess of wealth is not blind. She will examine who will make

proper use of money. She will also be sad if anyone misuses wealth."

Sai Ram, There are related matters such as when Swami prevented a

devotee from shooting himself (related by Sri Satchidananda around

1955); and His various teachings on illness and the mind.

Re: [saibabanews] A query

Sai Ram Patrick. Regarding the query from the lady with the deceased

son: Swami teaches that all life eventually reaches eternal bliss

although some humans reach it sooner than others. Suicide is not

healthy for the soul, but it does not completely distroy it as some

Christians teach. Sai Ram to you and Sai Ram to the grieving mother

and her son. Catherine

My deepest thanks to you all for your excellent

responses to my 'query'. All were very well worth while.

I do hope the answers may also be of assistance to others

who have been equally pained by such sad events.

Much Sai love to you all!

Here's another story about suicide from Sai Satcharitra:

Mr. Ambadekar

Mr. Gopal Narayan Ambadekar of Poona was a devotee of Baba. He served for ten

years in the Abkari department in the Thana District and in Javhar state, from

where he had to retire. He tried to get some other job, but he did not succeed.

He was overtaken by other calamities and his condition grew from bad to worse.

He passed 7 years in this condition, visiting Shirdi every year and placing his

grievance before Baba. In 1916 his plight became worst and be decided to commit

suicide in Shirdi. So he came there with his wife and stayed for two months. One

night while sitting in a bullock cart in front of Dixit's Wada, he resolved to

end his life by throwing himself into a well close by. He proposed to do one way

but Baba wished to do something else. A few paces from this place, there was a

hotel and its proprietor Mr. Sagun, a devotee of Baba, came out and accosted him

thus - "Did you ever read this Akkalkotkar Maharaja's life?" Ambadekar took that

book from Sagun and began to read it.

Casually, or we may say providentially he came across a story which was to this

effect. - During the life time of Akkalkotkar Maharaj a certain devotee suffered

very much from an incurble disease and when he could endure the agony and pain

no longer, be became desperate and to end his miseries threw himself one night

into a well. Immediately the Maharaj came there and took him out with his own

hands and advised him thus - "You must enjoy the fruit - good or bad - of your

past actions; if the enjoyment be incomplete, suicide won't help you. You have

to take another birth and suffer again; so instead of killing yourself, why not

suffer for some time and finish up your store of the fruit of your past deeds

and be done with it once and for all?"

Reading this appropriate and timely story, Ambadekar was much surprised, and

moved. Had he not got Baba's hint through the story, he would have been no more.

On seeing Baba's all-prevasiveness and benevolence, his faith in Him was

confirmed, and he became a staunch devotee. His father was a devotee of

Akkalkotkar Maharaj and Sai Baba wanted him to walk into his father's footsteps

and continue his devotion to Him. He then got Sai Baba's blessings and his

prospects began to improve. He studied astrology and gained proficiency in it

and thereby improved his lot. He was able to earn sufficient money and passed

his after-life in ease and comfort.
