Guest guest
Here's a story about a famous Indian industrialist that is recounted in business schools abroad. The story, as told by one of his sons, dates back a few decades ago to the days when they were not as affluent as they later went on to become. There is one incident firmly etched in my memory and continues to inspire me in difficult times even today. Those were the days of struggle. Father had just left his job and started his own venture. However, inspite of these pressures he would never lose a chance to spend time with us. One summer evening, Baba decided to take both of us brothers - aged 3 and 6 - for a movie. Accompanied by a colleague Mr. Shah and us, he reached the theatre. There, he went up to the ticket counter and enquired.” How much do I need to pay?" Seeing us along with Baba, the man at the counter replied" Rs.10 for adults and Rs.5 for children above 5 years. For children below 5 years, entry is free." Baba said: "Please give 2 full-tickets and 1 half-ticket" paid the money, took the tickets and came out. Shah uncle immediately said "You have won a lottery or what? You could have saved those 5 rupees by saying that the elder son was 5 years old. The man at the ticket counter would have never known the difference." Baba replied: "True, he may not have known the difference, but the kids would have." He continued: "When times are difficult and we are in the midst of challenging times, when ethics are more important than before, I need to make sure that I set a good example for these kids and live with them. If I would have faltered today in front of these kids, I can never build my dreams to reality nor can I expect these kids to carry on my legacy. In their lives they will come across far more tougher situations. Their success in such times will not be determined by whether it made business sense or not but by whether their conduct was ethical and above reproach or not. Success achieved by compromising on ethics is one which no respectable man will yearn for."' The above incident reminds us of various such situations we face in our professional and personal lives. Remember: we have a responsibility towards our kids; we have aResponsibility towards our organization and above all; we have a responsibility to our inner selves. Lets build our lives and our organization on the foundations of ethical conduct and..........................
