Shivratree Fasting

Dear All,

Why do we fast for Shivratree? We should ask ourselves this important question.

In Mauritius,'fasting' has started since one week; 'fasting' means eating sweet

food only and no salt.Pilgrims from all over the country have started to walk to

the Ganga Taloa, which is a sacred natural lake, beleived by the Hindus in

Mauritius to be part and parcel of the Ganges. It is told that when the Hindus

first arrived in Mauritius a hundred years ago, one cowherd man happened to be

sleeping near the lake also called Grand Bassin. In the midst of the night , he

woke up disturbed by the noise of giggles and songs and water splashing. He

silentlly went to have a look. He saw mermaids bathing and singing and laughing

merrily in the lake. The following night, he came accompanied by elders from his

village. They saw the fairies and knew that they were blessed by Ganga

Maya.Since then, the Grand Bassin has become first the 'Pari Taloa' and now the

'Ganga Taloa'.

To come back to the question of fasting, I wish to share this experience with

you. In 2000, I was in Parthi for Shivratree. I was busy helping in the kitchen

when the Seva Convener, an Italian Sister, arrived excitedly with this piece of

news. She told us that she had an interview with Bhagawan Baba. Baba had told

her that all the seva dals in the kitchen should observe a day of fasting by

drinking water only. Baba had said that those who have food by plenty should

sacrifice their share for those who are less fortunate.

"Water is a good cleansing medicine for the body" Baba says." Keep your tongue

still and concentrate on doing seva. You won't feel the pangs of hunger."

Fasting until the next morning, I offered all my thoughts at the feet of

Bhagawan Baba. Healthwise, I felt that the cure was miraculous!

Om

Sai Raam Raju,

We

will definitely pray for the people of Kenya at this time of Maha Shivarathri

nothing is impossible, this is the time for removing all the bad qualities

within and Swami will definitely shower his blessings on the situation of Kenya

For

this is the

great night of Sai Shiva. For on this auspicious day, it is said to commemorate

the day on which Siva protected the world from a

total annihilation either

by drinking the deadly Kaalakoodum poison which was held up in his neck, or by

effecting a healthy compromise between Brahma, the Creator and Vishnu, the

Protector.

color:blue">The Mahasivarathri is considered a very important day for fast and

Shiva worship. Though the observance of Shivarathri rites promises both

material comfort in this world and bliss in the other, it is mainly observed

for securing the latter.

color:blue">Let us all prepare our minds and spirits and prayer to Swami for

protection of all evils of the world and especially for the people of Kenya.

Your

sister in Sai Radhey Of Canada

I

offer my most humble pranams at the lotus feet of the beloved Lord Sai.

JAI

JAI SRI SAI MAHADEV.

Happy

Maha Shivarathri to one and all.

Dear all,

I share the idea of Brother Raju. We are already in the 'Prayer Group' and would

be praying for the world at large on Sunday which by coincidence happens to be

'Maha Shivratree Day'. We can all observe a day of fasting for the people of

Kenya starting on Sunday morning, say 6h00 until Monday 6h00. Subject to the

approval of all, of course!
