EDITOR'S DESK ---------------- 1 SAI'S NEWS FROM THE TIME MACHINE: Nov2, 1909: KakaSaheb Dixit, first arrived at Shirdi (Aged 45 years) Nov 5,1918: Khushalchand sheth of Rahata passed away. Nov6, 1960: Shirdi Sansthan's administration was taken over by the City Civil Court and a "Court Receiver" was appointed. ---------------- 2. SAI PHILOSOPHY: SAI PHILOSOPHY FROM THE DIARY OF SAI.BA.NI.SA. These messages are the outcome and essence of the dream sequences of Saibanisa as given by Lord Sainath, which reflect the Sai Philosophy and his high thinking. They carry a sense of deep meaning and are generally thought provoking, enough to set one’s thinking process. 26) 22-11-1995: When you taste the nectar or true bliss, do not confine it to yourself. Pass it on to others without adulteration and claiming returns. 27) 27-11-1995: Preaching my Philosophy in high sounding words would confine it to few fish in a well of sweet water. On the other hand preaching in simple language would be received in large numbers like fish in an Ocean. 28) 27-11-1995: ‘Vedas’, ‘Upanishads’, and ‘Shastras’ are all sacred and like pure rivers ultimately mix up with the Sea. Living a midst the 'Ocean of Sai' and searching for them has no meaning. 29) 15-11-1995: There is no point in counting the number of times ‘Satcharitra’ is read, what matters most is the feel of experience and incidents which help to remove ‘ahankara’ (ego). 30) 23-07-1995: A kiss to the children of your Master pleases him, whereas a kiss to the children of God please me the most. SAI IN LETTERS: Madhusudhan Nori, Hyderabad, India nomavi AUM SRI SAIRAM SAI IN LETTERS(Saibanisa's letters to his Son) http://www.saidarbar.org/HTML/ocean_of_mercy/sai3.jpg Translated from the Telugu original into English by Sri Sai Devotee Madhusudan Nori. Secunderabad - 28 February 2000 I request the readers to read first Sri Sai Satcharitra in English by Late Sri Nagesh Vasudev Gunaji, before reading these letters. http://www.geocities.com/seenukv/day-01-thu.htm OM SAI Hyderabad 26 January 1992 Letter - 21 (Chapter 23) Dear Chakrapani, I cannot write much about Sri Sai Leelas (Sri Sai Miracles) in this letter, but I will place before you the thoughts going on in my mind. Hemadri Pant wrote about Sri Sai in 23rd chapter thus - HE never said that HE is GOD, but said that HE is an obedient servant of GOD. HE always meditated on GOD -. Why did Hemadri Pant write like this, don't you and I say that Sri Sai is an incarnation of GOD? We must recognize Baba's greatness in this respect. Sri Sai is Brahma Jnani (Supreme Knowledge personified), is GOD HIMSELF but being incarnated as a human being HE set an example as to how a human being should behave. HE showed how to lead an EGO LESS HUMAN LIFE and hence never declared that HE is GOD. HE said that HE is God's obedient servant to indicate that human beings must obey faithfully God's word. Remember this always. Hemadri Pant wrote in 23rd chapter that Sri Sai said - Nana only he, who can digest onions, should eat onions -. I will write my thoughts on this statement, so read on carefully. We can compare LIFE to an ONION. When you peel off the layers of an onion, one by one, you will get in the end the core, which is not pungent but sweet, when you eat it. LIFE (ONION) is covered with layers of Arishad Vargas (behavior / desire patterns). When you peel off Arishad Vargas, Lust - Anger - Greed - Infatuation - Pride (Ego) - Jealousy, from your LIFE then you can live in BLISS. This is Sri Sai's message. We must recognize that Sri Sai has power to digest an onion, covered with layers of Arishad Vargas, and thus fully eliminating them. Do you remember the Proverb said by our elders - The good that can be done by an onion cannot even be done by mother-. I will modify this proverb as - Mother (Sri Sai) will remove the layers, called Arishad Vargas from the ONION (LIFE) and that Mother (Sri Sai) will make it (ONION - LIFE) blissful for HER children -. Sri Sai opposed blind beliefs of the society in those days. HE removed ignorance from them and awakened knowledge in them. Hemadri Pant cited two examples, in this respect, in this chapter of Sri Sai Satcharitra - Village elders decided that firstly Firewood is not to be brought into the village and secondly no goat is to be killed in the village as the epidemic of Cholera was rampant at that time. Sri Sai disregarded these orders, which had no reason or logic, and thus destroyed blind beliefs. I have told you that Sri Sai disliked blind beliefs and illogical acts. Now coming to blind beliefs Sri Dayabhai Damodardas Mehta, a resident of Mumbai was suffering from Typhoid fever during 1947. He wore a charmlet, given by a Mystic, around his neck as advised by his friends. He felt that evil forces were troubling him, as his temperature shot up further during nights instead of instead of getting under control after wearing the charmlet. He then surrendered to Sri Sai and sought HIS protection from the bottom of his heart. Then he heard the following words emanating from Sri Saibaba's picture frame placed on the bedside table -Why are you scared when I am standing, holding a stick in my hand, by your bedside since morning to protect you? Why are you still wearing that charmlet around your neck? Please take it off immediately and discard it -. Sri Mehta obeyed Sri Sai's words. He then went to Shirdi and prayed at Sri Sai's Samadhi and fully recovered his health. What is the lesson to be learnt by Sri Sai Devotees from these incidents? One must always keep far away from Blind Beliefs and Unreasonable cum Illogical acts. My advise to you is that when you face any difficulties and unpleasant occurrences in your life, you surrender yourself to Sri Sai and apply Udi / Vibhuti ( Sacred Ash ) from HIS Dhuni (Sacred Fire ) with unflinching faith on your forehead , mix some Udi / Vibhuti in a glass of water and drink it as a medicine for getting rid of physical and mental hardships / ailments. In service of Sri Sai, Your Father. Translated from the Telugu original into English by Sri Sai devotee Madhusudan Nori. 10 May 2000, Secunderabad. ------------ 4. SPIRITUAL GEMS FROM SAI SATCHARITRA "SV.SWAMY" svswamy1 & swamyswarna Sai Ram. Let us continue with the chapter 8. The human body has been given with a great purpose. It doesn’t last as long as that of the Gods. And it is not as short-lived as that of the insects etc. And the humans have been given the special faculty of standing and walking erect, so that they can see each other in their full beauty. And the sense of beauty, intelligence etc., all considered higher faculties are more or less exclusive to human beings. Thus the ability to appreciate beauty is a gift. By appreciating beauty and by learning the pleasure from appreciating and enjoying that beauty, man was freed from the cycles of nature, which protect the other animals. Thus human beings are the only species that are allowed to enjoy sex throughout the year without the restrictions of estrus (heat). But freedom always comes with responsibility. Thus the very desire to enjoy that beauty again and again is bondage. One may look at it as a curse, but one can by Sai’s grace looks at that too as a gift. Since, without bondage, there cannot be liberation. The realization that one has bound himself through desire is itself a great step forward, since without that realization, there would be no effort to get oneself free. The desire for liberation is in fact, the ultimate desire. Who is bound and who is liberated? Only the individual ego. The Higher Self, The Paramatma is always Free. The individual ego only goes through the concepts of bondage and liberation. Can the individual ego free itself? It is like asking can the prisoner free himself. Of course not. The ego is set free by the Guru, who has the key to the prison cell, the key of knowledge, not worldly knowledge, but the knowledge of the Self, that knowledge which sets the ego free forever. Sai showed through His life, through His Leelas, through His devotion that it is possible for the ego to get fully merged in the Higher Self and be thus liberated. Liberation or Mukti, Moksha is of many types. What is meant by that is freedom from the birth-and-death cycle. Freedom to take birth or not to take. Freedom from the inexorable laws of Destiny, Karma. The law which is inviolable for us, which says that we have to reap what we sow. The law which is only broken when we stop sowing further seeds of desires in our fertile soil of minds. By not reacting even in our minds. By realizing that the apparent sense of separation which causes the feeling of I, you, they etc., is an illusion, a trick of the ego. Sai Ram. Hemadpant rightly writes: If we condemn the human body and don’t take care of it, it falls into decay and we don’t reach the goal. And if we fondle it (because of the sense of beauty and the desire for enjoying that beauty) we go to hell, i.e. we go deeper in to the spiritual darkness of selfishness, self here meaning the individual ego. And the lower, baser nature, which is pleasure seeking, without the higher faculty of discrimination, without the sense of right or wrong. Between these two errors, the first error is less severe. Sooner or later, we realize that we need the body to live and so will be forced to take adequate care of it. The second error is more dangerous and more difficult to overcome. Especially the desire for enjoyment of beauty in others. Kama. Desire for possessions. This is the ultimate bondage and can only be overcome by Guru Kripa. In a later Chapter, one of Sai’s close intimate devotee, Shri Bapusaheb Jog asks Him, when he will get liberated. Sai’s reply to Bapusaheb Jog is truly applicable to all of us. Sai Ram. We will in the coming weeks continue with this great chapter. Sai Ram. Yours truly, SV Swamy ------------------------------- 5. QUINTESSENCE OF SRI SAIBABA'S PHILOSOPHY: (By Late Sri Bharam UmamaheswaraRao) "Shashi" : shashi_31 6. Is Sai Baba Saguna or Nirguna Swaroopi? Brahman may manifest as 1. Nirguna Swaroopi or 2. Saguna Swaroopi. There is no form for Nirguna Swaroopi; and Saguna Swaroopi has a form. Sri Sai Baba is PARABRAHMA. Some people worship God with form and some without form. To facilitate His Saguna and Nirguna, Sri Sai Baba manifested with form though He is the Omnipresent and Omnipotent Paramatma. It is easy to worship and easy to pray for His Grace. In Gita it is said: ‘Klesodika tarastesha may AKTA sakta cetasam Avyakta hi gair dukkham dehaved bhiravapyate’. It means' It is very difficult to concentrate on God without form and that a devotee will be troubled much. This is because for a person who is having attachment towards his body cannot progress in the path of formless God. The indescribable SAT-CHIT-ANANDA-SWAROOPA has come in the shape of Sri Sai Baba to facilitate His devotees. Many disciples of Sri Sai Baba have experienced His real NIRGUNA SWAROOPA. Baba clearly explained to a friend of R.A. Tharkad that, those who think that I am present only in Shiridi, did not understand My real nature. Am I not present in Bombay with you?’ Baba saved a baby who had fallen into fire accidentally in a far off place by immersing His hand in Dhuni at Shiridi. When Kharpade’s wife was much worried about an attack of plague on their son, Baba showed the plague boils on His own body and told her that He had taken away the disease from her son and not to worry about her son’s health. He had removed the poisonous effect of a snake bite from the body of Shama ordering the poison to come down from his body. These are only very few examples which prove the Omnipresent, Omnipotent and Omniscient nature of Sri Sai Baba. The basic elements of nature- Earth, Water, Fire, Air and Akash (Pancha Bhutas) were under His control and command. Thus He saved the people of Shiridi from thunder storm and reduced the fire of Dhuni touching the roof. Sri Sai Baba told His devotees that He present in the heart of everyone and conducting the acts of the world show He is JAGANMATA and is the cause for Creation, Sustainance and Destruction. Bhagavad-Gita says: “Iswara sarva bhutanam testate hrid-dese’ Arjuna bramayan sarva-bhutani yantrarudhani Maya”. It means ‘The Omnipresent God is present in the hearts of al beings, but the Maya is playing with them like mechanical toys depending on their previous actions’. The main aim of Sri Saibaba is to improve and elevate the mankind and other beings, removing their worldly difficulties by improving their devotion and impart divine knowledge and salvation to all. Baba being free from desires, self-controlled and ever dwelling on God must be soaked in SAT-CHIT-ANANDA. Baba is ‘YOGA SAMPOORNA AVATARA’. G.S. Kharpade said: Baba cast yogic glances at certain persons who were immediately filled with a wave of Bliss, which overpowered all their mental activities and kept them immersed in Bliss for hours without break. Al these go to show that Baba’s powers over the mind of others were used by Him to confer happiness of the highest order knows to us viz. freedom from all the anxieties and physical pains. To be continued… -------------------------- 6. DEVOTEES EXPERIENCES: 11/01/2003 03:36:34 -0700 sudha Dear sai devotees, I here by want to share with all of you about my experiences, by bowing my head at the lotus feet of SRI SAINADH MAHARAJ, the Ultimate. Once I was suffering for some mental tension was unable to express even with my friends then sat before SAIBABA'S photo and was crying for about ten minutes ...it was then I could feel that someone is saying me that heh! Cheer up! (In my mother tongue telugu), I was spellbound and to my wonder I noticed a timepiece in which the second's hand was suddenly oscillating (in the shape of a smile), I felt it as a gesture of my father SRISAINADH to me to smile. The very second I felt very relieved as if some one took all the pain in my heart. Another time was in short of attendance, and as it is one of the considerations in my academics was about to get detained that year, but I was fully confident that SAIBABA will do some miracle and make everything set right. I went to principal's room to talk in this regard. He said that he can't give me any hopes regarding this, but I was so cool that nobody can expect me so suddenly when I sat before principal's room waiting to hear the final result, wind was blowing towards me gently felt something strange changed my place for some reasons ...... I noticed that again wind was blowing towards me making me feel the same and I then noticed that wind was blowing only towards me, then I realized that it was SAIBABA, coming me and giving the moral support could not still believe that how could I be so tensionless in the most tensed situation. YES!YES!IT WAS BECAUSE OF SAIBABA.......I really experienced it. Once again, it was the time that thieves were coming to our hostel so often.one night I was so afraid and couldn't come out to drink water asked my roommate to come with me that she's also verymuch afraid and she can't come...then suddenly to my surprise I could see SAIBABA sitting in a fibre chair, giving a smile to me. Then suddenly I was so dared that I went to groundfloor, drank water and came...then went to bed after bowing my head before SAIBABA'S photo. There are many to list out so...I experienced a lot like this. I saw him for three to four times in my dream ...continuously opening his eyes and closing them. Though I couldn't understand the meaning of the dream...I was so happy that i have a lot of HIS grace. Now, I'm suffering from a mental tension and I look forward my father SAIBABA, to relieve me from the tension I'm bearing since 11months,by giving what I want. Oh! Baba! Please bless me with my love. I was very lucky indeed to share my experiences through this site.and I know this is made possible only by the grace of SAINATH OM SAI SRI SAI JAYA JAYA SAI. Sudha -------- 8. SAI WITH CHILDREN: http://www.saidarbar.org/HTML/portraits/7.jpg Smt. MadhuGopal Ravada, Saidarbar, Hyderabad. Hello Children! I am Madhu aunty. Do you know Baba use to play with children and used to tell stories to them? I felt children visiting Saidarbar should be entertained with good stories. So I have taken this responsibility. Tell your parents to read the Glory of Shirdi Sai - Fortnightly E-magazine and narrate you the stories from this magazine. DO NOT ADVICE FOOLS: Near a great lake in the island named Karpor lived a great white stork called Hiranmay. All the inhabitants and birds of the lake had accepted him as their King. King Hiranmay was a noble and just king who had developed peace and harmony in his Kingdom. He was also a great warrior famous for his speed and strength. Thus no intruder dared to venture without his patronage and blessings. One fine morning the stork held court near the edge of the lake when he was informed of the arrival of flock of swans. The leader of the flock came and bowed before him. The Stork King enquired, "How is your group dear Swan? What brings you to my kingdom." "Hail King Hiranmay! I have come here to seek your blessings and tell you my story. But it being a bit lengthy, I would seek your indulgence." "Partake of some refreshments first and then we shall hear of your adventures" replied the stork. After the formalities were over, the Swan began, "Far away to the west is the island of Jumroo. We had flown there while coming to Karpor. As soon as we landed we were surrounded by a group of local inhabitants. The king of the island is a Peacock and he spends his time pruning his feathers. He believes that he is the handsomest of all forgetting that the responsibilities of a king are more than just good looks. The subjects, who consist of a variety of birds and fishes, asked me their opinion of their island. I told them about your kingdom. O King! And the peace, harmony and plenty for which Karpor are famous. They were annoyed to hear praises of any other place except theirs, although they were the silliest bunch I ever came across. They all looked ragged and unkempt and were jealous or our health and prosperity and so arranged to have us imprisoned. We have somehow escaped from their clutches and reached here." King Hiranmay had been listening patiently and after the narration was over, smiled and said. "Your are lucky, friend, that you have escaped and also because this was an experience of a life time. Always remember the lesson you have learnt "Do not advice fools." LESSON: The proverbial saying goes like this 'Do not cast pearls before a swine.' which means that advice should be restricted to the intelligent, who will appreciate it. --------------------------- 9. ARTICLES FROM SAIDEVOTEES: Wed, 22 Oct 2003 09:09:10 +0100 (BST) Benefits of Compliance with Guru's Orders Total surrender to one’s Sadguru is manifested by several ways. Least of it is to completely obey Guru’s orders and carry out the tasks as asked to, without questioning. Shri Hemadpanth in Sai Satcharitha refers to such devotees as the First type of devotees. Let us see how one such devotee of Sadguru Sainath responded to the Master’s orders. S.B. Dhumal was one of the earliest devotees of Shirdi Sai Maharaj. He met Baba in 1907 and was interviewed by Sri Narasimhaswamiji between 12th to 26th October 1936. Sri Dhumal by then was a well-known lawyer at Nasik. He said that Baba is protecting us all twenty-four hours of the day. He did not go anywhere after Mahasamadhi. He is always present in all places. Baba is showering his grace thousand times more after Mahasamadhi. Baba's blessings can be obtained at any time with bhakthi and shraddha at any time. Baba's love to his devotees is immeasurable. One day Baba called him, and told him that he could not sleep for long time in the night as he was thinking of Dhumal. Dhumal flowed with gratitude for Baba's compassion. Dhumal always took Baba's permission before he did any thing and always acted according to his directions. After Mahasamadhi, he used to put chits before Baba's picture, pray and act according to the chit. At one stage, Dhumal wanted to go to England to become bar-at law, considered as the highest attainment for a lawyer. On Baba indicating that his spiritual inclinations will be fulfilled better in India, he gave up his attempts to go to England. Dhumal was offered public prosecutor considered as a prized post for a lawyer. On Baba's showing against it, he declined the post. At one time, there was plague in Nasik. Dhumal in his ancestral house found dead rats. Rats propagate plague, the deadly disease. Taking Baba's permission, he shifted to another house. There also there were dead rats in drinking water. He sent word for Baba's permission, and expecting favorable nod, he moved back to his ancestral house. Just before entering, he got a letter from Shirdi, that he need not change the place. Immediately he returned to the old house and had no problems except that he had to arrange to get water from the river Godavari. Implicitly obeying Guru's direction gives the devotee fullest happiness. Baba's power is omnipotent, as he is the God. Due to party politics in the village of Shirdi, one Raghu a devotee of Baba along with others were placed before criminal court and were convicted. Tatya approached judge Kaparde and Sathe for filing appeal. They opined that there was no chance. Tatya approached Baba who directed him to go to Dhumal. On looking into the papers, Dhumal also felt that there was no case. However, as per directions of Baba, he prepared grounds of appeal and approached the District Magistrate at his house. The District Magistrate told Dhumal that there was no case for appeal, but still asked Dhumal for his opinion. Dhumal mentioned that the case was the result of Village Magistrate passed orders of acquittal without posting for hearing. That is the power of Gurumaharaj Sai. The magistrate also enquired Dhumal of Sai. He asked him whether Sai was a Hindu or a Muslim and what he preaches. Dhumal replied that Baba is neither Hindu nor Muslim and he is above religions, and to know more, he should go to Shirdi and meet Baba in person. Dhumal received Rs 300/- from the released devotees but Baba collected it as Daskhina. Dhumal obtained a picture of Baba from Radhakrishna Mai. Baba took the picture, saw it from all angles, and kept it back in his hand for considerable time. He told Dhumal to keep it in his custody safely. As Dhumal desired the picture, which had Baba in deep meditation, he was immensely pleased and kept it with him all times wherever he went. Dhumal performed puja to it when Baba was alive and after Mahasamadhi. It gave him immense peace and happiness. Baba used to take dakshina various times and Dhumal was very happy to give them. Baba sometimes used to take, until Dhumal had nothing left. Dhumal knew that this was being done to reduce his ego and pride that he was a rich man. Dhumal, to practice humility, used to go and beg for food and used to take that food alone, after Baba's Mahasamadhi. Baba thus eradicated Dhumal's desires and pride. (A Contribution by Ramakrishna Madhavapeddi, Phoenix, AZ, USA) Arun Reddy Nukala --------------- Jacek pollner Maybe on side of Sai baba Shirdi should be something from Kabir who had been as Sri Sai stated alone . "Kabir is my religion"... There is extremely beautiful whisper of God. Some one as in heart of Lord Buddha was heard. This whisper is eternal beauty in temporary human existence. This is Kali Yuga...to be humble, whisper of God. GIVE UP PRIDE KABIR...be not proud of your body, A sheet of skin stuffed with bones; They who rodes with stately horses Under canopy of gold Now lie wrapped in earth. Shanthi -- "Akila" Diwali celebrations at NASSTA Mon, 27 Oct 2003 10:16:16 -0500 Hello everyone, The diwali celebrations at Sai Temple were really outstanding. I have always felt that our children in US are missing out on all the fun of Diwali. All we ever got to do is go to the temple and maybe have a party at Home on the weekends. Maybe some of us were a little more adventurous and Got some crackers to show the children. But the spirit of diwali was always Missing. This past weekend at the Shirdi Sai temple the organizers brought back the Spirit of diwali. It was a true diwali for everyone especially the children. After the aarti we all got to eat a sumptuous dinner and then the fun began for the children. We lined them up and went over some rules of safety with Them. They were all very patient and excited. When the crackers were brought Out you should have seen the looks on their faces. Even the adults could Revive their childhood. Not everyone knew everyone but once the fun began everyone was laughing and Talking about the colors and the fun we have been missing all these years. I Think the folks at the sai temple showed the kids the true meaning of diwali And they have thus started a new tradition for these children. It made me feel especially good when my 7-year-old said, "I'm going to pray To Baba that we have Diwali more often." Unlike other days when I had to Drag her out of the house this time she was keeping track of time so we don't Miss the fireworks. Thanks to all the organizers and our big thanks to our lord Sai himself for Helping us enjoy this wonderful day. Sai Ram. Ps to all those parents who missed this event please make sure you attend All the functions at NASSTA they are so informative to the children -------- On Mon, 06 Oct 2003 Sridhar Rangaswamy sathgurusai2002 OM SAI RAM SHIRDI SAI BABA. With that objective, a 'wholistichealth' was started. Similar groups were also started in other servers. While it is clear that only Sai heals, it is also known that He helps directly or indirectly. This is His way of helping indirectly. So, those Sai Devotees who are in need of health-related information, especially in Bach Flowers, Homeopathy, Reiki, Tissue Remedies and most importantly in Spiritual Healing are requested to avail the FREE services by joining one or all of the wholistichealth groups. The URLs (Web-addresses) of the groups are given below: http://www.smartgroups.com/groups/wholistichealth wholistichealth http://groups.msn.com/wholistichealth For example, if you want to join the , go to wholistichealth and click on 'join this group'.
