To return to other stories of Baba, there was a wrestler in Shirdi, by name

Mohiddin Tamboli. Baba and he did not agree on some items, and both had a

fight. In this, Baba was defeated. Thenceforth, Baba changed His dress and mode

of living. He donned Kafni, wore a Langot (waistband) and covered His head with

a piece of cloth. He took a piece of sackcloth for His seat, sackcloth for His

bed, and was content with wearing torn and worn out rags. He always said,

"Poverty is better than Kingship, far better than Lordship. The Lord is always

brother of the poor" - Sri Sai Satcharitha, Chapter V - The English version by

Shri NV Gunaji).

Baba lost the fight. However, He won the world and beyond. Stories of lives of

saints are uniquely impregnated with interesting events. Some times the events

may sound trivial, but every incident seems to have its message. Human life is

constant struggle and competition. Usually, the assessment of a person or an

event is shaped by the outcome and such a judgement itself in reality is the

ego ratified. Sainath’s contention is perhaps the same. Accomplishing victories

of mundane nature may ratify one’s ego, but does not necessarily guarantee the

permanent happiness, a pursuit every human birth longs for. Accepting God’s

dispensation and long for, if any, His grace will bring permanent happiness.

True winners are those who accept God’s will, surrender their selves to His

cause, accept their roles in His play and strive for the permanent happiness.

Beloved Sairam,

Since long this question was in my mind. Baba advised us in chapter-II of Sri

Sai Satcharitra, "Let there be no insistence on establishing one’s own

view. No attempt to refute other’s opinions. No discussion on pros and

cons of any subject." Further in chapter-X "If anyone does any evil unto you,

do not retaliate". Then how could Baba Himself involved in wrestling to settle

some issues with someone?

After learning from the book written by HH Pujyasri B V Narasimha Swamiji, I got

the answer for the above question. Baba will never go against His words. He said

in chapter-XL "See, to keep My words, I would sacrifice my life", hence what

Swamiji had written in ‘Devotees Experiences Vol.3’ is highly

convincing. Let us go through the account of Sri. Ramgir Bua, which he had

narrated to Swamiji on 1st December 1936:

"Moidinbhai’s son-in-law was mantrika (i.e. a magician) living at Belapur.

That man came to Shirdi. Baba and he had a quarrel. Then Baba left the village

and lived in the jungles 1 or 2 miles away from Shirdi. He frequently starved

there. If people went to him he would beat them.

Gangagir Bua of Vanjargaon came to Shirdi. He spoke to Nana Saheb Dengle of

Nimgaon and to other in high praise of Sai Baba, and said, "This (Baba) is a

Chintamani". Therefore, Nana Saheb Dengle went to Sai Baba and bowed at his

feet, while he was seated at the foot of a Babul tree. Later on, Baba came to

Shirdi and was living at the foot of a Margosa tree. Once, Baba himself spoke

of that tree, that under it (i.e. its shade) was a tomb. Baba was living under

that tree for 4 or 5 years. From the neem tree foot, he moved to the Mosque and

made that his residence ever afterwards. Baba lived about 50 years here after

his arrival.

Baba did not do any wrestling. But Gangagir was first a wrestler, and he

wrestled with Dandalgaon Patel, a Mahratta. In that engagement, he came off

second best. He then gave up wrestling and became a Bua (i.e.) an ascetic. This

was approximately about the time of Baba’s first arrival at Shirdi. Baba

and Gangagir recognized each other. ........"

When there was no fight, how could we say Baba lost the fight? Baba is always a

winner, winner of this world and beyond.

Be confident, we are following a True Winner, who won all the worlds,

He will take us to our real destination.

Then we will also be winners!

Om Sai Sri Sai Jaya Jaya Sai

Ever yours,

In Sai service,

N. Sivanandam
