The oldest more or less explicit source for most of these tales (which are legion) is an eighteenth century commmentary on the Nabha-bhaktamala. That's well over a century after Mira's demise. Morever, I don't know that the Bhaktamala tradition can be taken as authoritative for Rupanuga Gaudiya Vaisnavas either. Still, even Srila Prabhupada paraphrased this Jiva Gosvami story (some versions say it was Rupa Gosvami), in various preaching contexts. > Mirabai has considered Chaitanya MahaPrabhu as Krishna > and Radha and composed a nice Bhajan:- "Hari naam lau > laagee", where she exactly decribes Chaitanya > MahaPrabhu as a Sanyasi, shaven head, wearing saffron > garb, representing Krishna ( thus leaving behind > flute and gopies)! I posted that song to here a few years ago. Unfortunately, we don't know that Mirabai--whoever she was--actually even wrote it; there are only two songs written in her name occuring in any text that predates the eigthteenth century, and one is in the Sikh Adi-grantha--not exactly Vaisnava parampara. The other one is from a late seventeenth century Rajasthani manuscript. Suffice it to say that Mirabai basically has no dependable manuscript tradition, just as she has no undoubted sampradaya affiliation. > Mirabai is considered as "sahajiya" by some who > imitate her! It is not easy to consider Krishna as > one's husband- as such "sahajiya" are disregarded, as > they fake! Naturally, Gaudiya Vaisnavas will look askance on anyone who wants to take Radha's place rather than humbly serve her servants. It's true that some devotees may prefer wedded devotion (svakiya), but they never aspire to replace the Lord's own sakti. > At any rate, Mirabai is a Viashnavee and unalloyed > devotee of Krishna, worshipping Him as His consort! That seems to be a rather liberal assessment; as far as I know, the most credit Srila Prabhupada gave her is his nonliquet comment in a first canto purport that Mirabai was "celebrated" worshipper of Lord Krsna as Giridhari. All that said, some of the Mira bhajanas are quite nice, but an expert would have to judge them on their own merit, rather than by any clearly authoritative imprimatur. If the above mentioned is authentic, is it not ground enough to reject Mirabahi and her bhajans as she didn't approve of Radha. How can she accept Chaitanya Mahaprabhu and not Radha Rani! I would like to hear the views of the learned members. Regards Sanjay
